It's pointless you won't save any gas doing it but you might damage the tranny if it's an automatic. Just keep your foot off the gas and coast.

No, it's not good, for a couple of reasons. First, it's not a safe practice (you lose valuable engine braking, which results in too much speed). Second, it causes a strain on the transmission when you re-engage it (since the transmission must go through the gears, if it's automatic).

It is a practice that is highly discouraged in "real world" driving situations (although in some mileage trials, Shell drivers do put their vehicles in neutral while descending; they are professionals and know how to maximize mileage).

well, while I'm no expert, tho it would cause no major damage initially, all that shifting at high speed (or relatively high speeds) on an (I'm assuming) automatic cant be good for it.....and is causing more wear than necessary. Autos are meant to do their own shifting and not have you do it for them.

plus, more than likely if you re coasting, the auto's clutch is probably in....putting it in its own (much less wear) neutral.

also, just pointing out, but if you re doing this to save fuel economy....i can almost grantee you re not especially if you re in a new car.....watch you re RPM's that's what controls you re gas useage...when you shift into neutral does it drop dramatically??? no, and if it does...i think you got a problem on you re hands.

it is bad cos the trans oil doesnt pump while in neutral therefor leaving the gears bare and unprotected and that can cause overheating in the gearbox itself...

wont hurt it but you will have less control of the vehicle so it's not the best thing to do. also you will use your brakes more so they will wear out sooner.
