I am wanting to move to St.thomas in the us virgin islands , i am married and have a son that is 4. We currently live in houston texas. I have lived in singapore when i was younger so it is not that crazy of a thought for me. My husband is a fine dining restraunt manager, and i am a stay at home mom.
My family and I have been to St.thomas and many other carribean islands and have a real passion for the life style and beauty of these places. I know about the culture "island time" and that some islanders dont really like people from the main land...is that everyone , or just those with a bad additude.?
Does anyone have any suggestions, or anyone live there who can give me some advice.....
hey my thought is, there are so many wonderful places in this world and my husband makes his living in a career that he can do anywhere, so why just stay in one place...

I've been here ( ST Thomas) 35 years ...I think I'll stay.....

You seem to have a good balance of idealism and realism..all I'll add is
it takes awhile to get settled and for us to realize you're really serious about living here..so many show up, stay 4 months and split , that there is a tendency to be a bit standoffish.......so be prepared for 3 months of job searching

its way more expensive here.the Feds give their employees a 30% COLA adjustment.electricity is 33 cents kWh as opposed to the 10 or 14 cents you pay on the mainland...I run a pretty nice condo complex and a 2 BR. goes for about 2500 a month; with food, electricity, water, gas ( $4 a gallon today) you'll be spending $4k a month......I've told other people that 50,000 a year is NOT middle class income here....
but the weather is wonderful, you can sail and swim 360 days a year, NEVER SHOVEL SNOW.......there's a good Montessori school for the kid....

i've lived in st. thomas my whole life
people don't like the peope from the so called main land as u would like to call it bc they think they are better and its not a bad attitude its bc when you guys go down there we get disrespected

we're americans we're just not part of the 50 states
to us its the states and we don't really care for those people bc wen they come there they basically disrespect the people of the island

i don't think u should say main land because our main land is the island we live on and the people are not standoffish we just choose not to be arond people from the states bc they tend to be rude or bc they have to make fun of the way we live

things may be expensive but there is no tax on the items you buy

i think you should look atthings bc we have alot of things going on there such as people getting killed and what not and the people don't like to be offended cuz they will make things physical

www.stthomassource.com go to that and see some of our news

have a nice move by the way

I hear it is beautiful and a haven of rest, but the people I have spoken to always asking (me questioning them) why did you leave such a beautiful place to come "here"?? The answer is always that the economy is "so bad" over there. I hear it is again an awesome place to vacation but so far "again" people leave there to make a better living over here. Really research it well before making the decision to move over there. God Bless !

I purely have been given lower back from my first USVI circulate to two days in the past. I stayed in Saint Croix with my mum and dad who moved there approximately 6 months in the past and OMG became into it high priced. food is loopy high priced, however the booze and smokes are uber much less high priced. you rather do could do because of fact the different individual pronounced and get an condominium in spite of the island.
