My favorite YA books when I was a young adult myself were:

The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander
The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper
Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell

I read a lot of YA now as well, even though I'm not in that age group anymore, and these are my current faves:

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
The Mediator Series by Meg Cabot
Tithe/Valiant/Ironside by Holly Black

My favorite YA singular books are The Book Thief and I Am the Messenger, both by Markus Zusak.
The Thief, The Queen of Attolia, and The King of Attolia, all by Megan Whalen Turner, are a wonderful YA series that I adore.
Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen, all by Garth Nix, are part of another trilogy that I love.
I also enjoy Crown Duel, by Sherwood Smith.
Shade's Children, by Garth Nix again, is another great story.

I wracked my brain to think, but the answers came easier than I had anticipated. I haven't read these books in a while; when I was a "children's book" age, I was in YA. When I was the age to be in YA, I was in the history/bio/autobiography/fiction category. So the books listed above have some great words to still be remembered by me.
