First go into safe mode
Reboot
On boot tap f8 or f5
Go into safe mode and run the antivirus fully
When the antivirus is running all the time it is not as thorough as a full scan
Next try running a number of spyware removal programs
often these things go hand in hand and it may be reinfecting your computer ( phoning home)
try a number of these and with updates
Remove all it finds
Here is one
spybot
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1
adaware is another
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007/3000-8022_4-10701900.html?tag=lst-0-1
if the spyware remover program says do you want a scan after reboot say yes and reboot and let it do its thing
If you still cannot remove the culprit
you can try another antivirus ( by the way ensure that your antivirus list is up to date, click update) if you do not have a subscription either buy it or install a program better than norton called avg or nod32
Norton is not a good antivirus no matter what the name recognition is
You can have only one antivirus but many antispyware
You can do a free online antivirus scan and still have your old product at
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
by the way it is estimated that 50 - 60 % of computers have your type of infection so it is not a big deal

Try these steps...
1. Do a system restore (go to Start, all programs, accessories, stsyem tools, restore) to as far back as you can go.
2. If you notive any knew programs or toolbars on your browser, see if you can go online and search "removing ~name of it goes here". Most likely, what you have is not new, and there are detailed instructions on removing it.
3. Run your PC in safe mode (when the PC is starting up, keep hittting F8). Then run your antivirus program.
4. If all of this does not work, reformat your PC using the original operating system discs, that came with the PC.
I deal with virus' all the time, and to be honest, after backing up all the documents needed, I usually skip right to step 4. It saves time and fixes everything. Good luck.

A computer virus is a small program that infects a computer without the user permission. It attaches itself to other files and quickly multiplies.
It is strongly recommended that you use an antivirus program on your computer and that you keep it updated. This will prevent any infection and clean your computer if it was infected previous to the install.
You are infected with a virus if:
* Your computer is very slow, stops responding, restarts or shuts down by itself from time to time.
* Your hard disk or the removable drives (floppy drive, CD-ROM, USB Flash) are inaccesibles or the files are corrupt.
* Unusual error messages appear.
In case your computer got infected, try the following:
* Get an antivirus program (if you don't have one already) See the Download antivirus page to get a free one.
* Update your antivirus
* Scan all your computer and delete, repair or quarantine the infected files.
If you have problems in eliminating viruses from your computer, you can also try one of the free tools available in the Other download page.
To keep your computer virus free:
* Have an antivirus program and update it from time to time (some even update automatically)
* Use a firewall. Download one from Download firewall page.
* Only download files from sources you trust.
* Don't open e-mail attachments, unless you know who sent it.
* For more protection you can scan your computer with online scanners provided free by some of the best companies. See the Online scanners page.
* Spyware may sometimes be mistaken as a virus. Read about spyware.

What is your virus software? Many times it needs to be run in SAFE MODE to be effective, otherwise the worm/virus is in memory, and cannot be deleted.
To boot up in SAFEMODE, press F8 a couple times, just BEFORE you would normally see the windows load up screen with the green or blue bar going across. You will get a list of choices, choose plain old safe mode using the arrow keys and enter. Wait for safemode xp to boot, Run the full or indepth scan using whatever antivirus software you have. It might take a while, but if it warned you about it, it should be able to remove it.
If this is Vista, then it should be similar, but not sure.

Now, you can do a regedit to get rid of it. Please follow the instructions very carefully, because this is a very dicey thing for an amateur to be doing.
Go to Start and click on it. Go to Settings or Control Panel and click on it. In the Control Panel, please go to Performance and Maintenance and click on it. Now, on the left hand side, you'll see a box with System Restore there, click on System Restore. In the Panel that opens, look to yuour left and you'll see System Restore Settings, please click on it. In the Panel that opens, click a tick into the empty box by the line reading Disable System Restore and click on Apply and OK. Exit this Panel.
The reason why we disabled System Restore is that the copy of the virus would be there, if this wasn't done and it could re-infect your system from there.
Now, go back to Start and click on it. Go to Run and click on it. In the dialog box that appears type in regedit and hit Enter. In the Registry Edit Panel, click on Edit, next to File on the top row. Click on Find in the drop down menu that comes there. In the dialog box type in back door vvbot and hit Enter.
The right side of the Panel will now populate with the folder/file containing the virus highlighted. Select that and right click. Choose the Delete option and click on it.
Now, return to the Edit and click on Find next. Type in back door vvbot and click Find next. Again the list will populate and you'll need to delete the entry there. Do this till there are no more results. Your virus will have been completely deleted.
Please take care to delete only the highlighted entry and nothing else.
Once done, reboot and when you're back, enable System Restore by clicking the tick out of the box you earlier ticked and clicking Apply and OK.
The Manual elimination of viruses is a thing that Pros like me usually use and is not reccommended for amateurs who might delete the wrong file/folder; so, please be a bit careful there and delete nothing else other than the highlighted entry.
This should resolve the issue for you.
All the best.
Cheers.

Scan again and try and remove in safe mode.
In general, Windows does not allow the deletion of files when they are in use. However, Safe Mode will only load a minimum amount of drivers and services to run Windows, giving removal a better chance. Scan again and attempt to delete while your computer is in safe mode.
To access Safe Mode, reboot then repeatedly press the F8 key at the first screen. The screen will look strange, but don't panic. This is normal in Safe Mode.
When finished removing that pest, reboot again to return to normal mode.

Do a websearch for Housecall. It is a free online virus checking program.
use it to check your computer. It will need to allow a small amount of code to your computer so allow it to do that. Then run the virus and the spybot scans.....
Follow any instructions.
