You have some good answers so far - but they have all missed the key that makes Anthropology different from the other social sciences - which also study apsects of humanity. Anthropology is the holistic study of man, his culture, biological history and diversity, his languages, his history and how he has interacted with both other humans and the environment.

It is the study of humanity. There are 4 sub-fields: Archeology is the study of past cultures by examining what they have left behind, like artifacts. Linguistics is the study of language. Cultural Anthropology is the study of culture through ethnographic research, that is spending time with a group of people and learning there way of life. And finally there is physical anthropology which deals with studying human evolution by looking at human remains.

The study of humans and human life. There are many different kinds though. Cultural anthropology means you travel different areas and study their cultural. Linguistic (if that is spelled right) is the study of different languages. And there are a couple more.
