How terrible... the other answers that is.

First, odds are slim your fish would live long at all. Unless the water never goes below about 65, he will probably die in a natural pond. Second, if he does live, it can damage the environment to introduce foreign species like that. Give the fish to an aquarium store so that the shop can find it a good home in a larger tank where it will live safely and be healthy.

I hope you're not talking about a "wild" pond, and are talking about a pond you have set up in your yard. If it's not your pond in your yard, no I wouldn't release it. A lot of states it's illegal, plus it disrupts the wildlife in the area. Not to mention your fish may not survive, and it's just plain cruel. Do a search on Florida non native fish...they're pulling out all kinds of fish that are ruining the environment because fish keepers released them into the water ways.

If it is your pond, that would be fine, I have one in my pond in my yard. But come winter time, I bring him back into the house in one of my other tanks. Honestly though, you're best bet is to take it in to a pet store. Most will give you store credit for fish taken in. Someone will buy a large pleco for a big tank. Also, might want to consider getting rid of your loach as well. They grow to about a foot long, but being in a small 10 gallon tank, he'll end up stunted if he isn't already.
Good luck!

It is never a good idea to release exotic species into the wild. And being a tropical fish, it may not do well in your climate anyway. If you care for the fish, keep it and get a larger tank. If you're tired of it, consider giving it to a local elementary school.

If the fish is not native to your area you will do more harm than good. Run a free ad on Craigslist or check with local pet stores to see if you can get rid of it.

No, please don't do that, it is even illegal in some states. You might be adding an unknown pathogen into the pond,

Have you considered asking your local smaller pet shop owners if they would take them and rehome them?

Most are happy to do it and sell it to those who have larger tanks.

Give it to a fish store. They love donations. No ponds if you have snow. They are tropical fish.

If you cannot give it away to an aquarium shop or a more serious hobbyist, then releasing it in a pond is not a bad idea.

A Plec is a tropical fish, a pond is cold water. Doing this will kill it.

What you want to do is slowly acclimate your fish to pond water and that means like a little bit at a time then more then more until he is in pond water only. If you tried to put him in the pond right away with no prep you would kill him due to shock

Do you live in a warm climate? Then, yes. But it will likely be eaten fairly quickly by a wild fish.

or

take it to a small local pet shop and just give it to them
