Even though Marilyn was petite and quite svelte, she had very round hips and a big butt so her size is probably bigger than alot of people think. I have heard a whole lot of different answers to this question. A size 4 to a size 16. Marilyn definately didn't wear a size 4 for sure I don't care how much dress sizes have changed through the decades. You also have to realize to is that back in those days alot of movie stars didn't buy their clothes from designers. They usually had the dresses custom made by a studio tailor or a costume designer(Marilyn's was a guy named Travilla.) So considering that bit it would be really impossible to tell what size she ever wore because her clothes were either borrowed from the studio or custom made. Also Marilyn's weight flucuated heavily all throughout her life and career. As a teenager she was quite chubby with fat cheeks, in the highlight of her career she was fit, when she divorced Arthur Miller she again was chubby, and when she died she was very skinny. So it's really really hard to know exactly what size this girl wore.

The white dress she wore in "The Seven Year Itch" is a size eight.
Marilyn was a size 12 but that is a size 8 by today's standards. The sizes have changed in recent years. Vintage dress sizes are "smaller" than the sizes we have today.
So Marilyn would fluctuate from a size 8 in todays standards and size 6 or 10 depending on how she was dieting.

Height: 5 feet, 5½ inches
Weight: 118-140 pounds
Bust: 35-37 inches
Waist: 22-23 inches
Hips: 35-36 inches
Bra size: 36D
A woman of Marilyn's height, at the extreme of Marilyn's weight range (140 lbs), would probably wear a size 12 dress today (which is the same dress size listed for Marilyn in the book The Unabridged Marilyn).

All of the answersof 8 - 16 are absolutely correct BECAUSE dress sizes were different back then.
Lucille Ball wore a size 12. In present day time, she'd probably be a 6 or 8.
At M.M.'s largest she maybe was a size 10 in today's sizes.
There was a period in fashion history where all the sizes shifted. I apolgize for not knowing exactly when, but the numbers then were very different from what they are now.

Marilyn's dress size fluctuated between 8 and 14, although I believe she was usually a 10 or 12.

She wore a size 12, but it was at least 2 sizes too small for her. She was actually sewn into her clothes - that's how they always fit her so snugly.
I'd say at the end of her life, she was about a size 18.

some say sixteen
some say twelve
she had alot of things altered to fit her bust and hips, and lots of couture, actually norma jean was very knowledgable about designers and high fashion
i saw the queen mary exhibit of her personal belongings, and some of her dresses were as small as a size eight, like the stuff she wore when she was married to dimaggio, and other things from later in her life, namely alot of beautifully tailored and customized chanel suits from after her divorce from arthur miller were sized twelve

I believe she was a size 12. She was the ultimate woman, that all women aspired to be...God, what happened? Now, if you're not a size 0, you're fat.
I think that's what they mean when people say "the good old days."
