Professional Gossip. Make an appointment with HR and request that the gossiping party be there and state what you have heard and state the truth and state that you are not going to tolerate working in an environment that because of this persons actions has become hostile and ask the HR professional what can be done about this. This is the only way to change the situation at work without being a trouble maker or sinking to the other parties level. If this is happening in the HR department you need to go to the Senior person who isn't involved.
If this is personal with a group of friends, don't engage in any interaction with that person again. If they confront you that is your chance to set things straight.
If it is your family member, handle it however you feel is best. If it is someone in your husbands/partners family let your husband know what is going on and that the party can be invited to your home to try to work it out or you can choose to not engage with that person (s) again. You don't deserve this and need to take a stand for yourself.
Take care of you and treat others as you want to be treated.
Good luck!

If it will damage you professionally, I would say something to clear up your name and reputation. Negative perception can sometimes adversely affect a career.
If it is personal gossiping, then most times I ignore it, because you can't change what people think about you.

Walk away! Someone once said, 'Do not argue with a fool, for people will not know the difference'. Let them talk what they want to talk, as long as you know and God knows that you aren't like that, then nothing really matters.

blow it out of proportion. take the roumours they have made up and add bits onto it. make it sound cool and you'll gain popularity or come across as if you dont care what people think about you, just that you're happy being who you are. that's the hardest kind of personality to crush, and you will appear to have a great sense of humour. take it easy. I'd confront them! They hardly ever have the guts to tell me to my face anyway, but I sure as hell wouldn't let it continue. Cause payback is a bit*h. As much as some people say "who cares" what some people say about you can damage your life.

If I'm a celebrity, I'll just let it pass..because they r making money with the stories..and i have a reputation to take care of.
If I'm a common person, I'll face them and say "What did i hear you say abt me? Tell me on my face...and we settle it right now right here."

Walk away, who cares. If what they say is false then everyone will find out, if it's true stop doing it.
