If you're previously married and then divorced, your Divorce Decree would do it. Otherwise, if never married... well, there is no such document.

If you have never been married, you may have to go before a Notary Public to get a statement notarized in that effect. (IE: Consult with them to type up a document where you state that you are single and they notarize it.)

If you are divorced, you should go to the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the County/City in which you were divorced. They should be able to get you a copy of the legal document stating that you are divorced.

If you are widowed, then you should go to your local "Bureau of Vital Statistics." (Each state can have a different name for the offices which record births and deaths in that state.) A copy of the Death Certificate should also be permissible.

You don't need to. It is generally assumed that you are single and in some cases, you would have to prove that you are married. Now if there is a legal issue at hand, a simple search through the county records where you live would prove you are now married.

I don't think there is such a document. That's like trying to prove a negative.
