would you agree that it has one of the most saddest endings of all movies, especially since nearly all the characters die, and of course captain miller.
i also got extremely saddened when an american soldier was wounded and screaming and a german soldier came up and killed him

It is true to life, and very sad indeed. A fitting tribute though to the generation who risked their lives for the freedom of the world.

It's a great movie and a sad one too. The beginning is kind
of disgusting, because there was a soldier who had all his guts and intestines out while he was screaming for his mother. It was sad when that German came up to the agonizing soldier and killed him. Have you seen the movie The Pianist starring Adrien Brody? If you haven't you should. Its the real story of a Polish pianist who survives the Holocaust during World War 2. It's even sadder than Saving Privare Ryan. Here's the trailer if you're interested. You can find the movie in the Drama section.

If you ever do get to see it, make sure you see it under English subtitles. They speak with German and Polish accents and its pretty hard to undestand what they're saying sometimes.

It was likely one of the most accurate portrayals of war as far as Hollywood goes. As for the German soldier killing the American soldier, if you take a closer look I think you might see compassion in that action. If I recall that scene accurately (it's been a long time) I believe the soldier you're referring to suffered a wound to the intestines ... one of the most gruesome ways to die and for which there is no recovery unless you have full medics and immediate evac available. The German soldier was aware of this and as no one else was available to put him out of his misery, he took the dreaded action. It takes a strong and compassionate heart to do so. And then you are left with pondering that soldier's life from having done so.

In the ending a much older Private Ryan goes to the cemetery and finds the grave of Captain Miller, whose dying words to him were "earn this."
He says he's tried. He asks his wife if he has been a good man and has lived a good life. She says he has.
You have to put the movie and the events it depicts in the right perspective. Thousands of young men died in World War II. Some of them knew what they were fighting for and many didn't. Maybe they were just scared, or confused or in pain. What did they die for? Who did they die for?
If they died so that we and others in this world could be free, and if they died for us then Captain Miller's words should echo in our ears.
"Earn this."
Of course it's sad. Wars are always sad. But Saving Private Ryan's ending is no sadder than the ending of the war itself was, when we could stop and mourn the good men who had been lost and wonder if we could ever earn the honor they purchased for us.

yes it was sad, but that is the reality of war. there is no way to sugar coat it. personaly it made me even more appreciate of the things our troops do and did for us so we can be free. Saving private Ryan is a good movie. Band of brother is another great movie!

I LOVE that movie. One of my all time favorites. I cry EVERYTIME I see it. When Ryan is standing in front of Capt. Millers grave and starts his little speech to him "I think about what you said to me on that bridge everyday....." Then, crying, he tells his wife to tell him he's been a good man. OMG, so intense. But the best part is when he salutes. It's a tear feast for me. Oh and when Wade (the medic) dies.....He yells "Oh my God, my liver!!".....and he starts calling for his mama.....I BALL every time. That movie is AMAZING. It really makes you feel like you KNOW each character....and care about them.

well, when i first seen it my husband was fixing ti go down range (afghanistan/iraq) so yea, it meant alot, somewhat.... it was a really good movie... like the army creed says " I Will Never Leave A Fallen Comrad". my husband is in the army and IS in Iraq, so I know just about everything, besides the fact I am not in his position, but the fact of being an army wife is really tough, though some might seem like its all good, but its really not....
