You could check this, electronic control module, if it is a quad 4. It is placed right on the plate where you would change the spark plugs.

I haven't seen anyone mention this yet so here it goes. My fathers Chevrolet had a similar problem to yours and the problems was the Idle Air Control Valve. it is a small solenoid that controls the idle of your car. As I recall it was not all that expensive, Also check for disconnected or broken vacume hoses.

It could be EGR valve, throttle position sensor or one of your emission system components. Is the check engine light on? If you can, use your trouble codes to point you in the right direction. I believe Autozone will check it for free.

It could be a vacuum leak or something called the mass air flow sensor. You really need to take it to a mechanic. My quess is that your check engine light is on too. Am I right?

check......M.A.P. sensor...,..MASS AIR flow sensor,...check for computer code,s,...air filter.,..fuel filter,..obstruction,s in exhaust..including possible converter problem,s...good luck!...also check throttle position sensor.
