Satan is a 200th generation passed-through-many-hands fable about explaining away the existence of evil in a God that is good, taken mostly from Zoroastrianism.
Interestingly, the Magi were proponents of an aspect of Zoroastrianism, with "the best known Magi [being] the "Wise Men from the East" in the Bible, whose graves Marco Polo claimed to have seen in what is today the district of Saveh, in Tehran, Iran." Wikipedia, "Magi"
Since Heaven was an all-boys club in the beginning of such tales, Satan also became such, although as a spirit of opposition, it could technically be of either gender (which makes the Brendan Fraser movie all the more interesting, since it suggests God and the Devil being more alike quarreling lovers than testosterone-filled behemoths.)
So, yes, the gender was picked, but the spirit/essence was borrowed from someone else's tale.

Satan is the metaphoric representation of manifest evil and can be any gender that acts as it's minion whether knowingly or not is the question . Many play music and are either rewarded or cursed for trying to do good . Seldom is music actually a conveyance of evil . And if it is it's up to your judgment to realize what it's worth . If the musician lost it was it the fault of the music or the ill will of the entertained .
don't make the mistake of blaming the stars for fault lies in ourselves.

We didn't choose Satan's gender. He has always been male. This was fortunate as there has been enough discrimination against women already without the thought that Satan was female (as this would cause men to be good as God is masculine and women would be evil as Satan would have been female.)

In the man dominant world of the past, Satan or Lucifer had being characterize as a male. Some would speculate that there are no genders in any angel rank. So my official answer is I don't know and since they don't exist, a person can make them up as either gender or none. Pick and choose.
(Good Luck!)

Satan has no gender... neither male or female. Just as with all angels.
Satan was a fallen angel of God. Lucifer.
Lucifer wanted to be greater than God. He was sent to spend eternity in the fire and brimstone.

I don't really know, because I don't believe in either Satan or God.
I would think Satan would be a woman though....only a woman could hold a grudge against someone for this many centuries.
Heh.
