When I use substrate and all, I prefer a fine gravel in most every case. Very, very rarely do I use sand due to the increased cleaning hassle. Of course, I will use it is it will make a real difference to the fish.

Hi, I have no experience with sand but on best overall substrate I would say avoid anything like coarse, pea-sized gravel that could get stuck in their mouths. Anything smooth is fine, especially the small 3mm type often called 'Roman' or Dorset' gravel & it comes in a choice of many colours. Another good choice is larger pond-safe polished river rocks or pebbles available from many garden centres.

Even though food particles and fish excrement will show up better on the sand, it is harder to clean and maintain. I would prefer gravel because it is easier to vacuum than sand. Sand can also clog up a filter if it gets stuck in there.

My favorite is a natural colored very fine gravel. It's almost sand like though it is actully larger. You can use this for all varieties of fish as well as plants.
