I know there are a lot of different versions of the movies, shows, etc. alternating actors every decade or so. Which one is considered one of the best?

Ok. I'll check it out. But which actor is the best Holmes when the movies are in color? Just to let you know, I want to buy a set and I want to make sure that the set I buy has good actors.

As far as series go, aside from Basil Rathbone, the top choice would have to be Jeremy Brett's portrayals of Holmes in the UK television productions (and they are in color)---the entries in the series stayed very close to Conan Doyle's stories and Brett followed the written Holmes to the letter---two different actors played Watson to Brett's Holmes, both excellent.
My favorite Holmes and Watson portrayers for a single film in color were Christopher Plummer and James Mason in Murder By Decree.

It seems to be a never-ending battle between Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett. On one hand Rathbone is the most famous Holmes, but Brett has portrayed Holmes more than anyone. If you're looking for any specifics, for a BR movie "Sherlock Holmes in Washington" is amazing, for a JB "The Master Blackmailer" is excellent. I hope I answered your question!

One of MY personal favorites is The Twelve Napoleans, with Jeremy Brett as Holmes. I also love The Speckled Band -- that one's got the weirdest storyline of any Holmes story I've ever come across.
