When I was a little girl, I saw Michelangelo's "Pieta" at the New York World's Fair at the Vatican exhibit in the early 1960s. I was only 8, but I remember it as if it were yesterday. I've seen many masterworks since and I am not particularly religious, but I have never seen anything else touched by man like that. Michelangelo made stone look like velvet and tears. If there is a diety, he was surely touched by it.

God, how could you possibly answer that? There are so many genres, media, periods, styles. And you're including composers as well as visual artists. Geez. I guess I would pick Leonardo DaVinci. He may not have been the greatest at any one thing, but he had the most vision, and he has had more influence than almost anyone, except maybe Picasso.

Leonardo da Vinci, hands down.
Many say Michelangelo because he may be more well-known for the Sistene and David, but da Vinci has Virgin on the Rocks, the Mona Lisa (which I believe is THE most famous painting in the world), The Last Supper, and more.

The painters of the cave at Altamira, the architects of Stonehenge, the designers of the Sphinx--their art speaks to us out of the mists of prehistory. In 10,000 years, will the Sistine Chaple still be with us?
