you need to suck on the tube a little. when the water is over the higest part it will come down on its own. that is what i have found to work the best!

Whether you have a "self starter" or a traditional vacuum, they both follow the laws of gravity. The traditional one you start the siphon by sucking with your mouth until the water starts and putting that into the bucket. The "self starting" you put under the water at a slight angle and pump repeatedly until the pressure builds up enough to carry the water through the tubing. In both cases you must have the tubing in the tank as the highest point going straight down into the bucket. As soon as it gets past the highest point, gravity will take over and water pressure will work with gravity to continue the vacuum until you pull it out or break the pressure.

When you 1st put the vac into the fish tank, you put your finger over the smaller tube on the top. Then lower the bigger (bottom part) of the vac into the tank. Then remove your finger and it should siphon the dirty water out on its own. Make sure the smaller tube opening on the top (where you put your finger over) is above the bottom part of the vac. and it should pull the water out fine.

submerse the whole thing till there is no more air in the line or in the vacuum.place your finger over the end of the line to prevent air from entering the line then release your finger when you get the end of the line in the bucket.Make sure your bucket is on the floor to ensure enough gravity to pull the water from the tank. This is how I do it.I never suck water its gross and not needed.

Make sure the bucket your emptying into is lower than the fish tank.

It is probably clogged w/ crap. Take it apart. If it's new, put the tube in and suck on the hose to get the siphon started.
