This (ganglion cyst on my right wrist) happened to me last year and I too thought it was a bone... Although my cyst wasn't the size of a golf ball, I had x-rays taken and aspirated it. It wasn't too bad - it's not a surgery that will cut up the area, a needle(sorry!) will be inserted and drain the fluid. When the needle was going in, the area was numb(the doctor froze the area with a spray), so I didn't feel any pain with the needle...
Oh, and don't use the book method!!

What you have is called a ganglion cyst, they can return and can be stuborn. A doctor can drain the cyst in hopes that it will not return. If it continues to return the other option is surgical removal. I would not recommend hitting with a book, this is an old method to solve the problem that could result in other problems to your hand. If you would consider surgery I would see a hand surgeon, they are the specialists for this type of problem.

This sounds painful but it's the truth. When my son in law had a cyst on his wrist he banged it with a book so it would burst....

Never come back.

Personally I would have a doctor drain it.
