I mean, what's up with that? Do they actually expect to stay in business that way? These people need to come out of the dark ages and enter the real world.

Went to buy an ice cream the other day at a dairy shop and had to leave just to go to the ATM.

Chrissy B... yes, I knew that... but places like that don't really matter in the grand scheme of things anyway.

Are they waiting for King Tut himself to come in there and install a debt card reader?

merchants (the store) have to pay a flat rate to use the card service.
other card services charge per transaction if the total sales for the day don't meet a certain amount.
some just charge for each transcation. something like 2%. but if the % doesnt equal something like 50cents then they'll push the charge up to 50cents.
it can become extremely un cost efficient when you make such small purchases.
credit cards are not the answer. They charge you extra money for using your money, and charge the store too.
both sides loose, but the credit card companies win.
I think the idea of credit cards enslave us to big fat CEOs that don't care about us.
making the rich richer and the poor poorer.
I don't know about you but I don't like giving my money (through interest rates) to other people esp when I have nothing to show for it

My theory is that these companies do this in order to hide their revenues from the IRS. With a debit/credit card, sales can be tracked. But, if you are strictly taking cash, there is no way to track that. Also, in their defense, debit/credit card transactions require a fee PER transaction (1%-5%). So, if your individual sales are small, the transaction fees can eat away at your profit.

Merchants have to pay to accept debit/credit cards. A little store does not want to lose profits if they're just selling ice cream and little crap like that. Cash still works, carry some!

yeah, it's wicked annoying. I had a boyfriend who was FROM THE SOUTH and had eaten in waffle houses his whole life, but could never remember to bring cash when we went. I was broke at the time so I wasn't payin and I always had to wait in the booth so he could go find an ATM.

It's because they're cheap-it costs the business money to be able to process payment through credit/debit cards.
