I've been thinking about opening up a WIC store. Like a one stop shop for your WIC. But I would also carry all baby essentials. Bottles, diapers, medicine, clothing. Would you think it would be a good idea to have somewhere you can stop and get your WIC filled and also have all other baby essentials or would it be just as simple to go to the supermarket?

Hello. Sorry I've never used wic but I know tons of people that do and I work at a grocery store.

I think that would be really good. Alot of the most purchased wic items we have to make sure are always stocked up so we can meet the needs for people. Before they used to make you choose the store and they would print that on the check and you'd have to go to that store all the time. If we were out of something...too bad. We'd make acceptions because we know we had a responsability to keep these items in stock.

Now anyone can go to anywhere that approves wic to get their items. Which is a big relief to us incase we dont have enough at the moment. But it is hard for us to order ahead because we dont know whos going to shop at our store or another store for wic items.

This is all state changes, Im not sure how other states do this. Its a great idea I love it but theres going to probably be alot of government red tape envolved about meeting requirements and regulations...gotta love the government huh? But yeah its a good idea its worth a try. Look into it and at least you can say to yourself that you did that even. Good luck!!!

I think it would be hard to be competitive on pricing, because most supermarkets are chains and buy in bulk, so they get a huge discount.

On a related topic, I always thought the state should run stores for welfare recipients. The stores would carry good quality healthy food, but there would be no chance of buying prime rib and shrimp on food stamps. Such stores would have basic meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, pantry staples, canned foods, etc. but no potato chips, Doritos, candy, steak, shrimp, etc.

I really don't know if it would be feasible. Even if you did get a majority of WIC participants going to your store, I'm not sure you could pull in enough of a profit to make it work.
