They are used for birdhouses. Depending on the size, it is either a Mexican Bottle Gourd or a Chinese Bottle Gourd according to the first website below. The second website will show you what the finished products look like.

That would be a gourd. People often use them for cups, bowls, birdhouses, crafts.

In my neck of the woods one can buy seeds at the local Walmart and they are called "Birdhouse gourds".
