I currently have a female guppy in a breeder trap, it is one that is basically made out of netting, and was wondering how to use one effectively while breeding guppies. She is showing all signs that she's getting ready to drop her fry. I was also wondering the pros and cons about them and how people feel about using them. I myself feel bad and want to let her out but want fry more.

In my opinion, they are useful only if you don't have another recourse. That is, don't have a tank you can put her in alone. They can be a safe place for her to have the babies, but the babies will not grow well and will not grow to full size in a tiny little breeder net. So, yes, they do have a certain place for some people, but they are not adequate in the long term.

Breeding traps do stress out the fish. The plastic ones lack oxygen. The net ones trap the babies under the plastic corners. Although when used you can double the amount of fry caught.

What I do is if I see a gravid female I will keep my eye on the tank and when I see fry I am there to catch. Plants help and at one time I used to hate the filter as they suck up fry, but the filter can sometimes be useful depending on the type you have. I just remove my charcoal and leave the sponge in there. BUT you need to keep checking the filter box for fry.

Or you could just get a little tank to use as a tank for mommies to be. Then you put the babies in there.

BUT either way it is trial and error. Some fry get eaten, some get trapped in breeder boxes, some get stuck in the filter sponge (in this case I put the sponge in a pail with a little bit of tank water and move the sponge around)

By the way I find guppies are smarter then mollies when it comes to hiding, quickness from mouths and getting sucked up the filter tube!!!! Talking from lots of experience with the two types of fish....

Personally I don't use the net breeder, cause it's dangerous for the fry after they are born
If I really want to catch all the fry from my female I use a 3way plastic breeder
I put her in there, after she is done I take her out, start feeding my fry with "First Bites" and after about 2-3 weeks I just let them out in my regular tank
Or
What I do now, since I have enough babies from the fish I want, I just leave the females all one, and when they give birth all the fry that survives are growing much faster then in the breeder
You need to have real plants in your tank though that the babies can hide.
That's the best you can do, your female doesn't get stressed, doesn't abort and the fry is much more likely to survive in the tank then the breeder
Good luck

I tried using a breeding tank, but is was putting my fish under alot of stress. When a fish is under alot of stress then it could abort the babies.

Your best to put a lot of plants and hiding spaces for your baby fish as they can get eaten.

They are necessary for fry.

Don't feel bad for the female. She's fine.
