It seems that every 'portable' model we look at needs to have access to a hole in the wall - which is extremely impractical for our living area. I didnt think it'd be so hard to find something like a heater but for cold air....

I have a honeywell 3-speed tower fan that has a temperature control that actually works suprisingly well to cool a room. sounds like it would be perfect in your situation because it doesn't require any holes in the wall and it takes up very little space (I have it in the corner of the room).

An air conditioner is a heat exchanger, it has to dispose of the heat it takes out of the room, otherwise it's a zero sum game.

You will be blowing as much hot air into the room as cool, more actually.

The hot air from the unit has to be vented out of the room you are trying to cool.

They make the ones you can set out in the floor like a heater. I think Wall-Mart sells them if not ,most places that sell air conditioners have them

There are portable models which can be moved from room to room that exhaust out the window.

No they don't. All ac's need to vent to the outside. The heat produced by the condenser would cancel out any cool air produced by the evaporator. Then there is the water produced by the evaporator.

QVC has one that is portable. You can move it from room to room. You need to put a hose type of thing through the window though.
