the day my one year old niece was diagnosed with Leukemia. I think that it was harder than the day she passed away.

It was the day in 1972 when I first learned my first wife had been unfaithful to me.

The infidelity had occurred more than a year before while I was still in Vietnam. During my Vietnam tour I had been faithful in my marriage, simply by avoiding temptations that I might have had trouble resisting.

When I returned I had anticipated that our marriage would take up where it had left off, with the passion and love we had enjoyed for the five years prior to my going into the combat zone. I realized soon after my return that something was missing.

When I learned of the infidelity it was like a gut punch.

We stayed together for eight more years, but she became a confirmed cheating wife, and it got worse. By the time I filed for divorce I was concerned that some of her associations could be dangerous to both of us as well as to our son, who was 14 years old at that time.

I was willing to forgive and even to try to forget. I believe she must have considered me to be either stupid or incredibly naive--and perhaps I was.

It was very difficult to learn to trust another person after that.

A family member killed himself over a woman that wasn't worth jack. I say that was the worst day. Because all the rest wasn't final. Though I have had bad times it has long past and I'm here. But once he died he was no longer among us.
