What are they, and how do you use them?

Tarot cards are cards, like playing cards, that are used for divination or inner knowledge. Their are many types. They usually have different suits, such as wands and cups, which are supposed to hold different properties. You can ask a question and then lay down the cards in a certain configuration to obtain answers to your question. The interpretation can be found in books that are sold with the cards. They are usually very general and can lead you to self-understanding. Because you already know all the answers when you look deeply enough.

Kawaii Angel, The Tarot originated with the Gypsys in the fourteenth Century, it is a deck of cards that is used for Divination by many Pagans. It is composed of 56 cards which are divided into TWO sets, picture cards (Major Arcana) and number cards (minor arcana) and further divided up into suits (Swords, Pentacles, Wands, and Cups).

The reader will have the person being read, touch, or hold the cards, while thinking of what is is that the person wishes to have revealed. Then the Reader will shuffle the cards and lay out a certain number of cards, face up in a certain pattern. The number and pattern of the cards may differ from reader to reader but the usual patterns are the 3 card (past, prsent, and future reading) And the Celtic Cross of 10 cards. By practiced reading the person doing the reading can ascertain the past course of a person's life, where he/she is at now and from that determine a POSSIBLE future outcome. Some readers are VERY good at what they do and others tend to rely on interpretations taken from a book that usually accompanies the Tarot deck. Others are just plain old scam artists who are in it for JUST the money that they can get for doing the readings.

There is, OBVIOUSLY, a LOT more to the Tarot than what I have put down here. A proficient reader may learn many different interpretations, conduct many readings, and study many different KINDS of Tarot decks before he/she feels proficient enough to give an accurate reading that flows smoothly and is NOT confusing to the person being read..

Hope I helped out a bit.

Brightest Blessings,

Tarot Cards are used to divine answers to questions. They are not used by "psychics" necessarily. There are several different versions when it comes to the art and theme of the Tarot. However, they are all designed over the same set of cards - the Major Arcana, and the Lesser Arcana, which itself is made of the 4 suits.

Strangely enough, when used by the instructions - that is a question is posed by a shuffler, and then the diviner sets up a certain pattern of cards - you do see connections.

What they are is the easy part, how to use them is harder. There are many different ways to lay out the cards, and interpretation of the results requires study & practice.

The Tarot deck is where today's playing card deck comes from—with the exception of the cards known as the Major Arcana, which are not part of the standard playing card deck.

The classic tarot deck is thought to have first appeared in Europe—probably coming from northern Italy—during tha late 14th century CE.

A popular theory of the deck's origin was put forward in 1781 by Court de Gebelin in "Du Jeu des Tarots" from "Le Monde Primitif." It describes the tarot deck as an ancient Egyptian book—"The Book of Thoth"—said to have been saved from the ruins of burning Egyptian temples, then carried to Europe by wandering gypsies.

It is not known if the Minor Arcana (the 56 cards that correspond to today's playing cards) and the Major Arcana (the other 22 cards that make up a 78-card tarot deck) were originally a single pack, of if they had been devised separately and later combined.

It is thought that the deck originally had several purposes, including:
• A pictorial presentation of the times
• A card game involving suit trumps
• To read and foretell the future

The Major Arcana consist of 21 numbered cards (1-21 or I-XXI) and an unnumbered (or 0) card, The Fool. Each of the Major Arcana bears a symbolic picture and a descriptive title which are intended to help awaken a connected story (based upon the layout of the cards) within the diviner's mind. The meanings of individual cards can be strengthened or weakened by the cards next to them in the layout. The meanings of individual cards can be delayed, weakened, or reversed if the card is reversed (upside-down).

(The only card from the Major Arcana that remains in the playing cards of today is the Fool—known now as the Joker.)

Each deck of tarot cards comes with a small booklet with some basic instructions for their use. You can also find such information on the sites listed below.

With the plethora of decks available today, some interesting variants have appeared. As an example, one deck I own has no provision for reversed cards in making readings from it. The deck is always to be shuffled to place the cards all into the same "up."

There are also a considerable number of layouts (also called Spreads), so that my best suggestion to you if you wish to indulge yourself would be to look up a number of them, and find one that seems to fit you best. Now that I think about it, that advice also holds for which deck to use.

Tarot cards are the original full version of the standard playing card deck which first came out in the Middle Ages. There's four suit cards extra: the "Knights", that are no longer used in the modern deck. Also, the suit cards are Wands (Clubs), Pentacles (Diamonds), Swords (Spades), and Cups (Hearts). These four( and sometimes five) can represent anythng that comes in fours: (earth, air, fire, water), (Gnomes Undines, Fae, and Salamanders), (winter, spring, summer, fall), etc.

Maybe you've played some card games that use several cards as Trumps. The Tarot has a special set of 22 Trumps, which is considered to be paths to enlightenment. Ceremonial magickians equate them with the 22 letters of Hebrew, as well as the celestial orbs of the Kabbalah - The Tree of LIghts. It's a symbol system that can be put to various and diverse uses.

The main card game that's played with these cards is called Tarocchi. The 'Star Wars' high-tech gambling version -was played by Hans Solo and his gambling buddies.

Divinination:
One misnomer is that the cards tell the future - they don't. Shuffling somewhat randomizes the deck, and a 'reading' attempts to bring some meaning to the randomness, which tells you more about yourself and your psyche, then it does about any future.

The 'spreads' are somewhat arbitrary, like the Celtic Cross. You add the meaning to the card layouts from a suggested meaning in guidebooks. Hear is how one Tarot Reader thinks about the cards:

WANDS
Wands represent activity, ideas, work (labor or business), social settings. It depicts ideas, energy expanded, actions taken. It is what "motivates" us...creates ambition. They also represent sex and sexual relationships. People who are wands tend to have light brown hair and hazel or green eyes. The are trustworthy, ambition, motivated, and usually very loyal.

Because of their creativeness, and natural ability to organize, you will find them to be very busy with meetings, activities and social events. They draw people towards them with their warmness and attractive personality. They are down to earth and are lovers of nature.

When there are many wands in a spread, it indicates that there is a lot of activity going on. Specific cards will help you to identify if the efforts and initiatives are worthwhile or instrumental to you. To me the wands indicate activity, travel plans, thoughts, ideas, and effort put forth.

When I see an absence of wands in a spread, it usually indicates to me that the person is not putting forth much effort, and that they seem to lack the motivation necessary to accomplish their goals. Wands to me, also represent family or family members.

CUPS
This suit represents our heart. Our love, our happiness, our emotions. Cups refer to water, a symbol of love. The cups express our desires....where we find our beauty. Where we find our emotional happiness. Cups may also indicate new beginnings, fertility, abundance in all things. The cups can also show us our sadnesses, our disappointments, our emptiness, and our lonliness. It reveals to us the heart and the feelings that we keep stored there.

When there are many cups in a spread, it would indicate to me that this person was feeling very emotional and wanting her feelings to be known. People who are cups, are kind, sweet, loving, understanding and nuturing. They tend to be light hair and light eyes, blue or green. They love with all their heart, and it easily broken as they tend to be sensitive.

Sometimes tend to be a bit "selfish" and "self-centered", but that is not something that they would recognize readily. Only a few cups in the spread would indicate two things to me, either that person is not one to "wear their heart on their sleeve", or they are very good at keeping their emotions to themselves, and not comfortable with displaying them.

SWORDS
Swords represent action, power, force. It is an indication of worry and stress and anxiety.
With many swords it can be expected that there will be losses and accidents and perhaps even tragedies. It exposes the ill will, deceptions and wrong doings of others and yourself.
It explains where your "hurt feelings", bitterness and resentments stem from. Swords can represent jealousy, resentment, possible neurosis and psychosis.

Swords are also indicative of military, government, police, FBI, detectives (spies). On the wrong side of the law it exposes the drug dealers, sexual deviants, and hurtful, spiteful people.

People who are swords are very articulate and intelligent. They seem to command respect with their dignified and arrogant air. They are observant, knowledgeable, outspoken and witty. Swords have a tendency to be condescending and insensitive. When "reversed", they can be quite domineering and controlling.

When there are many swords in a spread, I know that there is much worry and stress going on. It could also indicate surgery or a hidden illness.

PENTACLES
Pentacles represent the material things in life. Money, such as paychecks, social security, pensions, and even welfare checks. It could indicate inheritances, real estate, property, gambling, raises and bonuses. Material success, diamonds and the finer things in life.

People who are pentacles are dependable and trustworthy. They are down to earth and have a big heart, and they are hard working and generous. They have a sensible outlook on life using their careful analysis and realistic approach, and they can be stubborn, and a bit pig-headed at times. When in a "foul" mood, they tend to be pessimistic and rude, giving a "prim and proper" attitude. They do have a tendency to be obssessive and compulsive.

Pentacles tell me the financial story of the client. If they have enough money..do they pay their bills on time..are they due for a raise..can they expect one? Do they have money that is owed to them...will they find that new job...will they get that unexpected check?

They are cards slightly bigger than playing cards used by a 'medium' (look it up in a dictionary if your not sure) to tell your fortune - tell you what's going to happen to you - part of the occult in other words - tread carefully - you can get caught up in this stuff very easily and let it rule your life or rather someone else whose reading the cards to you rule your life, not to mention taking money off you every time they read the cards to you - ok?
