Through today's (Sunday's) games, we find the AL East standings:
1. Boston 48-26 (.649)
3. New York 26-27 (.493)
The Yankees are 11 back, but let's play with the rest of the schedule.
If Boston maintains that .649 for its last 88 games, they'll go 57-31 (.648) for a final record of 105-57. Yow. To match that, the Yankees would have to play 69-20 (they have 89 games left) for a .775 winning percentage. Gotta say that that is not going to happen.
If Boston stumbles to a .500 record the rest of the way (44-44) and winds up 92-70 (.568), the Yankees would need to play 56-33, a .629 pace, to tie on the last day. Possible but extremely difficult.
It's not over until the magic number reaches zero, but it ain't lookin' too good in da Bronx, izzit?
Tick-tock, tick-tock,...

Believe me, folks, I remember 1978 all too well. Yes, the lead was 14 games at one point; yes, that evaporated; yes, I know Bucky Dent's middle name.
Just showin' the math to it. The Yankees are NOT going to play 69-20, so if they want to catch Boston, they'll need help. It's possible, sure, and worse has happened to better teams before (1951 Dodgers, anyone?).

Oh dear, thanks, my typo, the Yankees are 36-37 (still .493 though). All the math is right, I just missed the "3" key twice.

I'm a big Red Sox fan, but the Yankees have been doing this for the last couple of seasons. If the Red Sox get Mark Buerhle(sorry about the spelling) then you can consider it over.
The Yankees always seem to come out of no where though. A-Rod is probably the only player playing like an All-star at the moment, the other Yankee bats should start to get better, their line-up is stacked, yet A-Rod is the only one playing like an All-star. So I would expect the other players to start playing like all-stars soon(I'm not a Jeter fan, I believe there are better SS in the league).
The Yankees always seem to make pretty good trades around the deadline. Who knows what pitchers will be up for grabs, but at the moment there doesn't seem to be many.
The Yankees are finished, though there is always the wild-card. The Red Sox have a stacked line-up and a good pitching staff(better than the Yankees). Beckett has been doing a wonderful job and getting Buerhle would help them out more, especially with Schilling out.

Yep. Even though I don't believe the Red Sox would be so stupid to trade 3 or 4 of their top 5 prospects who are all going to be great they'll still hold the division. Then the offseason. The train starts to come off the tracks. A-Rod leaves and signs a 20 million dollar deal with the Cubs. The Yankees sign Andruw Jones and he flops 2 years in a row. Johnny Damon hits under .270 next year. The rotation turns to pieces and it starts all over again.

It's still early, but in order for them to keep themselves in the chase for the wild card, they need to sweep the Orioles in Baltimore this week and need to take two out of three from the Angels at Yankee Stadium. Based on their recent history with the Halos, it's going to be a tough chore. I really don't see them coming back from this deficit in the AL East, but they're still in the hunt for the Wild Card. The Yankees will go 3-3 this week, taking two out of three from the Orioles and losing two out of three to the Halos.
The Red Sox have better starting pitching than the Yankees do. The Red Sox will probably have a ten game lead going into the All-Star Break.

No, I don't think they do, and I'm a Yankee fan. The best thing for them to do is to play some younger guys, hope Phil Hughes can come back and get some experience this season, wait for some contracts to expire after this season, then re-load for next year. It's just an off year, they'll be back. They are just too far back and too inconsistent to make the playoffs this year.

they may not catch boston but the wild card is still well within reach if they pull thier heads outta there asses. and i think it was in 78 or somethin that they were 14 1/2 back in july or august and came back to win the division. new york would have to basically sweep the remaining head to head matchups though to catch em.

It would be tough but it could happen. They surely have the hitting power and all their injured players will be coming of the DL and that would give them a big boost in their pitching rotation.
