Yes they can die if the water is too cold...It sounds like it is suffering from a disease...Does it have little white spots that look like salt on it? This is common for black mollies. There is a medicine for that. You can get it at any good pet store. And Mollies need warm water. It is easy for them to get diseases if the temp of the water falls below a certain temperature.

Make sure there are no little spots on him. If there are then your fish has ich. You can go to any pet store and buy the stuff for him. Yes fish can die from the water being too cold cause it puts their bodies into shock. Mollies like to be in tanks with temps between 78 and 82 degrees and they like about 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt for every 5 gallons of water. You should also get some test strips to see if there is something wrong with your water. Or you could take in a sample to a local pet store and they will test it for you. Good luck with saving your little guy.

Boil the kettle , when luke warm add some of this water with water ager, if your mollie starts to move around you know then that you need a heater. try placing a reading lamp over the top of the tank to warm the water up, in australia we do have cold water tropicals but those fish are purpose breed for cold water
