Silver sand, which is usually what kiddies play sand is known as.
When I've replaced my substrata which I've done once so far, this is mixed with the sand for the benefit of the plants, I take and store 50 pct of the water in buckets, placing all the fish in there with a heat source, i then strip everything out and relay the substrata (sand) then the washed gravel back in, then deposit half my new R.O. water and then all but the fish bucket of old water, then i get everything back up and running replant the tank with plants, add half the remaining fish occupying bucket check the tank's temperature and that everything is going then add the fish and the final amount of water and top up where necessary, the whole process takes me about 4hours but this is a 72"x24x24 so about 120 imperial gallons and hell of alot of sand.

If you do it your way you'll find you get an awful lot of sediment floating on the surface which will take ages to get rid off.

you're able to look at paying for a smaller separate tank in simple terms in case of emergencies or some thing. Then positioned the fish their on an identical time as you do the changing of the gravel and the sand.
