The previous response is all correct except there are only 12 troy ounces in a troy pound.
This is from Wikipedia:
In troy weight, there are 12 ounces in a pound, rather than 16 as in the more common avoirdupois system.

$653.60 per ounce times 12 is US$7843.20

You can find daily gold prices on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) here:

Gold is sold in troy ounces. There are 16 ounces per pound.

Gold is now about US$643/ounce. This makes a pound of the glittering stuff about US$10,288.

Nymex also has prices on many other (but not all) key industrial metals. You can look at the LME and Chicago Mercantile Exchange for additional metals pricing.

Addendum: Ooops. Yup. That's right. There are 12 troy ounces in a pound. My bad. One thumbs up for you.
