Try checking with Halloween Tombstones, it's a website dedicated to tombstone Halloween decorations and has a section on making your own. While most of the section is dedicated to using styrofoam insulation, there is a section on making wooden crosses. Also, using Halloween Tombstone's suggestions for the styrofoam insulation tombstones you could swap plywood as you'r building material.

Get a hunk of an old wooden plank - the rougher looking the better. Using a woodburning tool, make your tombstone epitaphs & be sure to make them as rough as rugged looking as possible. You can use these year after year.
Screw a portion of a metal rod up the back of them so you can sink them into the ground & they will stay where you put them. You can drape spiderweb from them, put big fake spiders all over them to make them look as scary & creepy as possible!! Have fun with it!!

Use wood, a woodburning tool, and diluted black paint. Draw the shape of the gravestone, burn in the inscription and paint the wood with the diluted painted and rub the paint off with a cloth to give it an old look!
