Yesterday my gecko had a pretty good shed except for the toes on her left foot. They looked swollen and red at the very tip and one was bleeding. When i picked her up to put her in a warm bath to soothe her toes, she seemed to make whistling sounds, supposedly from her nose. My mom said it sounded like a mouse. Her body language kind of said she was struggling or "huffing and puffing." Is this a gecko cry? Or does she have breathing problems?? Help would REALLY be appreciated!

Wow, that is some dry cracked skin. No, seriously. Do you have a moist hide for your gecko? This is essential, and allows them to keep moist so this doesn't happen. Keep misting to keep her comfortable and clean.

I think you're right about this being a sign of pain and discomfort, as they really don't make any other audible sounds.

She is stressed or in pain. If they don't lose all the shed from their toes, it can constrict and cut off the blood supply. Soak her in a very shallow bowl of warm water and use a Q-tip to gently rub the shed off the toes. It may take several soaks to accomplish this. Seek out a reptile vet if this doesn't help, but don't wait too long or she could lose toes. And like said above, they must have a warm humid hide available 24/7 to avoid this problem.

What type of bedding are you using?

Geckos do make a squeaking sound when they are angry/upset. I am betting she/he just didn't like being out into the water.

You need to provide the gecko with a humid hide box. The problem with the toes is because she is not shedding properly, more than likely due to the lack of humidity during the shed.

Many lizards have a difficult time shedding the skin on their toes. This can lead to several layers of skin constricting the blood flow, leading to the loss of toes.
After soaking the lizard to soften the skin, CAREFULLY remove all of the layers.
The way to prevent this problem is to provide damp moss in a hide box.

I've been told that if they don't shed the skin on their toes they can lose a toe. So that may be what happened, lost that part of the toe, which is probably painful. Keep it clean and it should heal.

You should take her to the vet. She could get an infection in her feet and that would be very bad. I think that if it was hurting it the gecko could make a cry noise. Good luck and I hope that every thing goes ok.

she could be, pregnant, molting, hungry, sick, or have salt built up in her nasal passages (a common lizard problem). there are too many different things it could be. you should take her to a vet. if her toes are bleeding she could have been huffing /puffing because of the water touching the raw skin, or it could have been the temperature change.
