i'm not talking about the ones that you use a glass of water. I'm talking about a compass that I could probably take with me. If there isn't anything you can think of, then where can I buy/get one?

You could take a bar magnet and hang it from a string around its center so that it balances and then could swing to point to north. It doesn't work very well, especially when it's moving, but this is how they first did it.

You can buy a pretty good compass pretty cheap (at least much better than you could make yourself!) Look on EBay. The best kind (I think) has wires or pointers to line up on a landmark on the horizon, so you can find where you are on a map or chart.

You can use an analog wristwatch--one with a dial---to determine which way is north by using these instructions---

Otherwise, just buy a good compass at any outdoor equipment store or hardware store.

I suggest using the sun as a reference if you can not find anything otherwise :) That is, if you can not get a compass or make one, since it would be really inaccurate. I don;t know how to make a compass, sorry :(
