Right the next person would be the Speaker of the House.
The reason being the founding fathers and later congress believed that since pretty much all of the offices of the executive dept (Attorney General, Sec. of State etc) were chosen by the President, the successor of the leadership should be someone that was rather chosen by the people. At that time, the equal representation senate was the ideal place to chose the next successor for the president.
And since the Head of the Senate is the Vice President, why not just take the next in line from the senate.
I believe after the Speaker is the Majority leader? I don't know for sure about that, but i'm pretty sure.

By the Constitution, the next in line of succession is the Speaker of the House. But none of them will be around for much longer, as the Big Changes are just around the corner!
