The monorail is useful depending entirely on where you are going. If you are staying at a place that has a station and going to one that also does, it is actually great. There would be no better option if you are at MGM and going to the Convention Center.
With that said, it can be far from the station to the strip. Bally's and MGM are the worst so yes, it would be a long walk to get to Luxor from the MGM Station if that was your destination. But like someone else said... its Vegas you better be ready to walk!
I have maps for the monorail as well as each hotel along the way to help you plot your course at...

The last time I was in Las Vegas was 2005. I bought a 10 ride pass for $20. It depends where you are going, I was at a concert in the Hilton and with the monorail I was there in minutes. Yes they have wonderful bus service but very slow as there is always so much traffic on the strip. Even just to take a ride on the monorail is amazing day or night it goes behind the casinos, so you do have some different scenery.
Cheers

the 10 ride pass is now $35...at $20, it was decent value, at $35 - if there's more than one of you, a taxi will usually be much quicker and generally cost about the same...they do have a special offer for a 1-day pass for $8 through the summer.
if you are solo, it's not a bad and fairly inexpensive way to get around if you don't mind the time it takes to walk from the monorail station to your destination. In most cases if your destination is the casino associated with the monorail stop - it's not that bad (Bally's and MGM are the exceptions as noted - quite a long walk). If you want to go out onto the Strip itself or to another nearby hotel, it can be quite a haul from station to destination.
we walk all the time in Vegas and don't have any concerns with walking...but in some cases, by the time you walk to the monorail, get on the monorail, ride to your stop and walk to where you are going you could have walked from your original point to your destination in less time.
We normally only use it to go to the far ends - MGM or Sahara...or the Hilton which is off the Strip...otherwise it's not really worth it to us - we'll walk or if we are in a hurry we will take a cab.

Contrary to what was mentioned above, the monorail doesn't break down all the time. It had a lot of problems when it was first opened, including parts falling off onto cars in parking lots, but there haven't been any incidents in a few years now that I'm aware of.
You do have a bit of a walk, but you have to plan on doing a bit of walking in Vegas anyway - this is much less and at least it is air conditioned. It doesn't cover the entire strip, however, so take a look at the maps before you make your decisions. If the monorail doesn't work for you, there are trolleys, buses and cabs if you don't want to use your feet. :D

it's $5 per trip unless you get a day ticket. I found that a taxi didn't cost much more. the monorail stations are out the back of the hotels, and quite hard to find sometimes. I got so lost looking for them.
try the cabs, or there is a bus that goes up and down the strip that will cost you $2 (I think it was called the deuce) it was a big black double decker, it will cost you that per trip and in low traffic is a good source of travel. or there is a trolley as well, but I'm not to sure how much that will be.

That actually is not true you may have to walk 50 feet or so, but its las vegas your supposed to walk there. The monorails will have arrows straight to the entrance of a casino.

I haven't used the monrail as I always rent a car when I go to Vegas but everyone I know who's used it says it sucks.
The main complaint is just what you said - that it leaves you so far from the entrances to the hotels that you might as well just walk to them from The Strip.
I hear they've also had a lot of problems with the monorail breaking down quite frequently.

The monorail leades you straight into the hotels. I loved it. It was better than the DC Metro (where I live) which I thought was already good.

Only used it the once to get a close to the stratosphere as I could.
The only way to see Vegas properly is on foot.
