Is there a good way to get rid of them without resorting to chemicals? Is there a way to repel them?

Aphids are a common problem on veggies because it is difficult to completely get rid of them without using a chemical agent. A harsh spray from the hose gets rid of them for a little while, and collecting them by hand (bunch at a time) and putting them in a jar with water and dish soap will lower their numbers, but without chemicals, it's difficult.

You could also try an organic solution like Tabasco sauce mixed well with dish soap and vegetable oil in a spray bottle.

You can steep 2 garlic cloves in 1 gallon of water for 24 hours. Strain. Do not dilute. Spray on plants, no more than twice a week, to get rid of aphids, spider mites and scale mites. I grew up in Texas and we used this in our garden because it was so cheap- the trick to any poison whether it is soapy water or sevin spray or whatever, is to spray it DIRECTLY on the aphids. If you just spray the tops, the solution will drip off the sides and the bugs under the leaves will survive to make more bugs. Invest in a pump sprayer so you can fill it up and mist from the underneath and not have to kill your fingers pumping a bottle. Good luck!

you can very easily get rid of aphids with this- in a 32 oz spray bottle put 3 drops of dish washing liquid, then add several drops of hot sauce (the hotter the better) fill with water and shake. Spray aphids, white flies and all soft bodied insects with it. No harm done to beneficial insects such as lady bugs, praying mantis and the like. No harm to the environment either. You can also use on all plants in & out.

A couple of days after the insecticidal soap, spray the plants with a weak sugar water solution. This mimcs the smell of the aphids (they excrete something similar called honeydew) and will attract ladybugs which are nothing less than major aphid chompers.

Julianna, I would like to share my cure all with you,
get a spray bottle, squirt in apx 2 TBSP of antibacterial dishsoap, apx 2 TBSP of any cooking oil, add water to fill the bottle, shake up, and spray the plant down, including underside of leaves. No need to rinse! Will not harm plants or bees. While the lady bugs are great they might end up in your neighbors yard(Personally experienced..lol)! This mix is safe for all plants incl. houseplants and works on spidermites also!

Fingers, water blast, or insecticidal soap.
I usually just use my fingers and squash the little buggers as I inspect the leaves and new buds. They are particularly fond of the new foliage and new buds. If you have too many plants to do it this way then a good blast of water from the hose (not recommended for roses) or insecticidal soap should do the trick. You can use diluted dish soap instead of the store bought version if you like.

just learned this trick. get a ziplock bag, a tennisball, and some vaseline. put the tennisball in the ziplock and then coat the ziplock in the vaseline. hang the baggie over your plants and the aphids will flock to it because of the color of the tennisball and get trapped and die. give it a try and good luck.
