I wish I could give more than one best answer. The overwhelming consensus here is Mickey Mantle and, to be honest, that's what I was thinking but I wanted to hear the opinions first. I'm just sorry that I couldn't split the best answer with a number of you, even some who didn't pick the Mick.

In the end, I have to pick Gene M because for a Red Sox fan, his answer was a little more of a pill to say. Reggie Smith played for Boston, after all!!

The best ever was Mickey Mantle, though Pete Rose was pretty productive too.

1. Mickey Mantle
2. Pete Rose
3. Eddie Murray
4. Chipper Jones
5. Reggie Smith

there are some good ones, Mickey Mantle, Eddie Murray, Chipper Jones. Of course a lot more. I will have to go with Mickey Mantle.

I would have to say Chipper Jones. He has a .305 batting average! He plays for the Braves, currently.

Though, Mickey Mantle is considered the best switch hitter in MLB History. He had a .298 batting average. He had the most home-runs.

Pete Rose was close behind Mantle. As was Eddie Murray.

Mickey Mantle - and it's really no contest. As large as his statistics are, anyone who thinks Rose was a better hitter than Mantle should take some time to study the issue. And while Chipper Jones is good, Eddie Murray was better - and neither of them are close to Mantle's level of greatness.
