Junior should be 5th on the All-Time HR list, getting ready to be 4th and that's counting the injury plagued seasons. Bonds and Sosa have no right on the list. Here's hoping Griffey at least passes Sosa before his career is done. The day A-Rod (Or Pujols) passes Bonds will be the greatest day in baseball history. Man, I got off a little. The answer to your question is YES!!! Say Griffey averaged 40 HR from 2001-2006, that'd mean he'd have exactly 700 HR to date. Oh, and he's 5 years younger than Barry. Griffey would be right on track to shatter the record.

Well, yeah, but so what? Wave the magic injury-free wand and Bonds has complete 1999 and 2005 seasons and Aaron is long since in his rear-view mirror. Dave Winfield probably reaches 500 homers. Ruth finishes around 750. Gehrig certainly passes 500. McGwire has complete 1993-94 seasons and perhaps doesn't learn the plate discipline he demonstrates later. Reggie Jackson stars in the 1972 World Series. Mantle has an even greater career, maybe even stays off the sauce and smacks over 600. Blyleven has another season, ends with 301 wins and 3900 strikeouts, and the Hall voters stop acting so damn stupid regards him. Belle ends up with a Hall plaque. Puckett zooms past 3000 hits.

There's a lot of mighta-beens across the long reach of baseball history, but we can't do anything about any of them.

I think the more apt argument is that baseball fans WISH it was Griffey breaking the record. Yeah he can be showboat like all the rest of them, but he's a clean player who always worked hard, plus a role model for god-knows how many kids during the 90s, unlike certain perpetually suspicious figures (*Bonds).

What ifs...(sigh)?

that would make sense...considering he's still beasting balls at this point....and now he's by himself for 7th all time....and at 21 homers this season....and he has had some injury plagued seasons...so i think he'd have a great chance at the record.....and he's now 2 homers away from 6TH all time...

i think before ken griffey jr retires....then i think he'd have a chance to move a few spots up.....i mean he's a great player (i'm a lefty so he's one of my favs)...but i think those injuries will hold him back....he's still hitting plenty of homers at this point...

There is absolutely no question about it. He is approaching 600 and hasn't slowed down much -- I believe he's already 20+ HR's this year. He will still go down as one of the greatest home run hitters in the game, and is a Hall of Fame lock.

Easily! Griffey is such a natural power hitter, with a smooth sweet swing. Healthy, he'd have been there and there would be no controversy!

He still could hit 800 HR's if he stays healthy and comes back to the AL as a DH

Did he tie or pass McGwire today???

Sort of, what would Tefd Williams have done if he didn't go into service with the Marines.

Yeah, I really think he would be, I mean he's gonna hit 600 anyway, but his old teammate A-Rod is gonna blow the record away.
