The Titans were a bit of a joke in the early years, and the team needed a facelift after that.

Jet engines were becoming wide-spread at that point of the 1960's, and the team was moving into Shea Stadium, home of the Mets. No doubt the new owners thought it would be catchy to have something rhyme with the popular Mets.

that's because they used to play at shea stadium and there was a jet taking off or landing every 90 seconds and it is also rhymes with mets. they are not most imaginative organization.

Since they moved at Shea and there was the Mets...just rhyming it was the idea to catch the Queens' area fans' attention.

they use to be called the titans from 1960-62 before they became the jets we know today.
