two months ago, i moved into an apartment in the bad, high crimed neigborhood of Houston. that has been the most horrible time in my life, i don't know anybody in this city, and problems just keep coming to me. First day of the month, refrigirator broke down, maintaince guys came in and fixed 4 times, finaly got me a new one, continously underground pipe broke, entire room flooded, few guys came, finally got that fixed, then, hot water was out for three four days. not done yet,,,,,,Few days later, somebody came into my apartment, stole my computer away, i am pretty sure that was done by one of apartment maintaince people, but there is nothing i can do. Now i am moving out of that apartment. but i am still in one-year contract with them. How do i let them release me out of complex? i have police report, i called 911 enmergency twice in the month, first time was a black strange male punching my door in the midnight, and second time is stealing computer.
what can i do, please help

contact the Texas Apartment Association. see what their advise is in this matter.

this is kinda 'you get what you pay for'.......high-crime, low income neighborhood.......did you think it would be a bed of roses?

I am sorry that you are in such situation. I know the answer I am giving here is not what you would want to hear. But you know, you made a bad decision by moving in to that apartment in the first place. Bad neighborhood and bad building will always give you unexpected and unnecessary financial expenses. Just like buying an old used car; it will end up costing you more money the whole time you keep it. And good thing that you did keep written reports on those incidences; including the reporting made to the police. Always keep a diary on every possible incidences and nuances about the building. These written reports will help you on your case including written report to your landlord. Also find an affordable lawyer to help you for better advise. Lastly, better move out soon.

First step. Talk to the landlord. The LL risks some liability if you go to court. But so do you. On these facts there it is an open question if the LL breached his duties. If he didn't you owe him 10 months rent unless he relets. He is not responsible for the neighborhood, nor can you prove his people are responsible for the loss of your computer. The fridge broke, but diligent effort was made to fix it and it was fixed. Pipes burst as long as he is reasonable in repairs you have not cause of action. But a judge might be sympathic to your story of woe so the LL has reason to keep this aimble. Explain why you are moving, when you are moving and work with him to relet.

go and talk to management. tell them you think a maintenance man stole your computer.explain to them that he is a employee of the comples so the complex can be held liable.tell them you either get out of your lease or you will sue the complex and its owners.if you have to just leave then it will probably be put on your credit rating. no big deal cause you can rebut their complaint by a complaint of your own

Sounds to me like if they go to court the landlord could lose out because of all the problems with the apartment. The judge may decide to give you back your deposit but don't count on it.

You should go to court first and sue them. Call an attorney and get his or her advice. Better to find a female lawyer for this I think.
Good luck

You leave, and if they keep your deposit go to small claims court>

You don't have to live in those conditions!

Take pictures, keep a log!

Sit down now and write everything out that you can remember!
