If you want something more teen/adult then you have to read Twilight by Stephenie Meyer and it's sequel New Moon. Those books are way better than Harry Potter(FYI, I'm a super Harry Potter fan) They are romantic and super good. I'll put the link to her website and it has the first chapter for both books, so that you can see what they are before of if you choose to buy them :)

Try Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. I'm a university literature professor, and I certainly wasn't bored. In fact, there's a fair amount of quite adult stuff in the books (not explicitly sexual, but philosophically intriguing) that mostly just flew over my kids' heads. In England, like the Harry Potter series, Pullman's was marketed both to adults and to children, with different covers for the different target audiences.
(I like Harry Potter too!)

Lord of the Rings Trilogy (read the Hobbit 1st)
Inheritance Trilogy (eragon/eldest/?)
Star Wars books (mainly the origional ones (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6), but the opthers are good 2, just not as much like the HPs.) (the 1st movie/book is really boring (its background info mostly), but it has its interesting points, so dont stop reading them just b/c of the 1st one)
Chronicals of Narnia
Pellinor series (its EXTREMELY like LOTR, but it has its differences)
there are probably more, but i cant think of them.
i promise none of these are really kids books, and the Harry Potters aren't really either. there kept in the teen section @ Barnes and Noble and Books-A-Million and probably all the other book stores 2. Heck, my mom likes all of these (exept for Pellinor, shes never read them) and shes 40.
Harry Potter rocks!!!!!!

I was going to suggest the Charlie Bone series or Artemis Fowl series, but those are sort of for kids. I'm not embarrassed to be a potter fan because they are for everyone! Don't think of them like that! Adults read them too.
I would also Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.

The Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage. Actually, someone in a review said, quote, " Watch out Harry, there's a new wizard on the way!" End quote. I need to finish the last book in the series. Oh yeah, and they have, like, 42 chapters and about 500 pages...
But it still is a little more on the "child" side, but it is SO good.

Cirque du Freak by Darren Shan
i loved the darkness of it, it may be a bit juvenile but still has the magic quality, brilliant story line and deep description that JK Rowling's work has. Rowling also read them and liked them so i guess thats a good indicator! best of luck!
