I always divide my Oreo cookie.

Sure, there seems to be a greater rift among Americans in recent years than before, but I think that within the past year, we have come together against the wrongs and secrecy of the Bush administration. Look at the midterm elections, I think that that alone can say that we at least agree that it is indeed time for a change.
And as a response to lumberjack, since when did diversity and immigration divide people? I implore you to consider your response before sharing it, America has always been diverse, how could that possibly divide people? Just because some people have different origins doesn't mean they can't unite against oppression or poor governance.

I don't see any civil war looming?

just political divide that has pretty much always been there...

Bush, clinton - they are just the mouth pieces of their respective political parties....

so no america is not divided - people are angry and have their idea but that does not mean they want anarchy or to try to gain a true utopia by using force against people who have differeing ideas (sounds like religious disagreements ....lol)

The country is even more divided then anytime I've seen in my 56 years on this planet. That includes during the Vietnam War.

I put the blame on divisive politics, smear radio and talking heads.

I have come to the conclusion that most people are sheep and only question the things that they don't agree with and go lock step with what they do believe in. That goes for the ultra right to the ultra left and everyone in between.

Rule of thumb, multiple sources, believe 10% of what you read and 50% of what you see. Don't trust one news source and certainly not the government.

The whole west is divided, not just america but europe as well. PC and multicultural liberalism is tearing US traditionds apart whilst the neo-cons are questioning their president and his motives, creating a divide in which millions of voters are lost in. It doesnt matter who wins the 2009 presidential elections but they must heal this ever widening rift or the US will become the next Europe, torn and divided, questioning self belief and destroying their own liberal foundations.

First of all, thank you for asking a legitimate, thoughtful, "unloaded" question. Recent issues do seem to have polarized many Americans and I don't think either camp feels that its viewpoints are being heard. Congress and the president seem to often be fighting just for the sake of fighting. Midnight decisions and recess appointments. Yet I think the daily grind keeps most people focused on the morgage, the kids, and seeing exactly what Paris Hiltion is up to now rather than engaging in marches on Washington or letter writing campaigns.

Karl Rove and the Bush Family colluded to divide America right down the middle.

Well, there is the Continental Divide. Americans disagree on lots of issues. It seems most Americans agree on the need for border security and the need to stop illegal immigration.
