Can we include dead bassists? Cos if so, it'd have to be a toss up between Jaco Pastorius and James Jamerson.
Sorry I can't name one cos they've all been influential to bass playing and music in general.

When the Police were still together, Sting ran some very good bass licks, and now Flea is pretty darn good!!
