I have a toilet that does not have a tank. Today it started continuiously flushing. What do I have to do to repair it and what is the name of the part or parts that I would need?

Thanks

Sensible is on the right track, but a flush valve is a bit more complicated than a regular toilet. You need to remove the cap, that hides the shut off screw, and a large flat screwdriver is needed to turn the water off. Next, you need to push the handle, to release any pressure still inside the flushometer valve. Now you will need a spud wrench( a smooth jawed wrench, that won't mar your chrome finish) to remove the large cover. Once you remove the cover, there is a black plastic cover, that you need to remove. Below this is a black rubber diaphragm, with a plastic round part in the middle. Remove the whole assembly, and look on the flat part of the diaphragm, for a small, round, brass colored opening. If there is any debris or dirt in this opening, the toilet will flush continuously, just as you have described. A needle or a welders tip cleaner are the perfect tools to clean this orifice out. Now assemble everything as it was, and turn the water back on, and the unit should work properly. Good luck!

Like anything else, a guinea pig is flushable. However, your toilet was only meant for #1 and #2 (and sometimes #1.5 after some Taco Bell). So before you flush the toilet, you must also make sure to take a dump in it as well. This will make the toilet think it is flushing like normal and help your guinea pig flow down the pipe easier.

If it just has a flush valve (mounted near the wall) you will need parts for the specific brand of valve. You can turn off the water by removing the nut on the end of the pipe coming out of the wall and using a screwdriver. Once the water is turned off, remove the top of the valve. You should see a large rubber diaphram. Pick it up and blow through the chrome piece on the diaphram or clean it with a needle. This may be the whole problem. Good luck.

You have some good answers above. But never call a plumber. I called Mike Diamond Plumbers in Orange County, Ca. For 10 minutes work using a screwdriver, my bill was over $700 dollars.

My solution would be to turn the water off using a flat screwdriver and call your friend for dinner and replace the diaphram.

Im guessing your double hung is made of timber, so the metal bars on each side of the sash are the spiral balancers and sound like they need to be replaced (repairing them is not an option as they are basically encased springs). For this I would recommend hiring a repairman to replace them as the job is somewhat tricky. If you were to replace them yourself you would need to get the correct size spirals (depending on the sash height and weight range), remove either one of the timber beads holding the sash in place, pull the sash out, remove the old spiral balancers, refit the new balancers and 'adjust' them so the sash is perfectly balanced. It is too much to explain without a diagram or clear instructions so I would recommend a window repairman to do the job.

Sounds like you need to replace the flapper (the rubber piece that is raised when you push the handle.) I recommend the Korky brand. Take yours to a local plumbing supply store and ask for a replacement. It would also be a good time to replace the fill valve.

Need a new flush valve. Google the manufacturer to find out the part number and where to get it .
