I agree! We could be great but are not. Europe, to me, seems to be at least twenty years ahead of our time. They know how to take long vacations (while we stupidly stress ourselves out over here) and like you said are not afraid to elect a woman. If we elect Barack or Hillary, then I think we are finally getting somewhere. We will be practicing what we preach about equality and opportunity for others. When you ask if the nation is ready...some sections are and some are stuck behind the times too. People who call Obama or Clinton Communists are severely misinformed, or are just repeating drivel from the Conservative party that refuses to embrace change. It doesn't take a genius to figure out where the behind the times/refuse to embrace change states are located. Thankfully I don't live in one of those states!!

This country is great, we've built the most power-full war-machine in history. The American people are a giving people, we can be brilliant sometimes, we have helped many nations. I don't know why your fixated on a lifelong Demlican female for president. America should have affordable health care, no doubts. This country is backward but mostly because of religions who ta-wt woman as a lesser person, this is because all religious writings have male authorship. There are few country's that I would want to live in besides this one. I do know that freedom is just an illusion and America could be so much better.

I believe for our nation to become more civil it needs to go backwards and not forwards.
Trading items was much more civil than when money became an issue.
When families were able to work the farm and not have to seek outside employment, the family unity was intact. Today we have kids growing up without parents, some never have seen their grandparents, and too much responsibilities given to children at too young an age.
Our medical system is overly expensive for what little it does. I've known of 7 cases of staph infections that were deadly for the individuals just last year, and four of them died. The staph is in the hospitals, in the surgery rooms, and in the care rooms. The medications are overly expensive, with a 300% mark-up. Most meds are processed in Canada and then shipped back here, so its the same stuff, just
Canada keeps better control on their pharmaceutical industries, not allowing them to add excessive charges.
What happened is that people believe somehow that the government is regulating things so that we are not over charged and that the amount is capped, which it isn't. The gov. allows larger corporations to charge what they want to, such as the oil industry, the pharmaceuticals, and processors of food items. It's greed for the mighty dollar, and you folks keep paying their bills.

Let's see. This backward country that provides free healthcare to the needy? If you doubt me, go to the county health department in any town you live in. You'll wait in line, just like you do in Europe, but your healthcare will be free. Same if you go to a federally funded hospital -- there's one in every city in every state of the country. They cannot turn you away based on your inability to pay. And gee, you're not even taxed at 44 percent like Great Britian is.
People dying needlessly? Of what? People die in this country -- and every country -- every single day. There are not, however, people dying of starvation or thirst or totalitarian dictators who rape and kill the women and enslave the children just for the sake of making a political statement.
Most of the aristocracy in Europe are just figure heads with no real authority over the people at all -- except to tax them so they can continue to live in manner becoming a king or queen. And the countries that have presidents, like Ireland, also have a Prime Minister who is in fact the top decision maker, NOT the president, who is JUST a figurehead.
I don't believe that anyone in America thinks a woman CAN'T rule and WOULDN'T do a good job. Bring a woman on who can do it and it will be done. But don't go nominating a woman because "she's the first." Nominate someone based on their skillset, not their husband's skillset.
Britons and the Europeans are taxed at such a ridiculously high rate that yes, while their healthcare is "free," everything else is not. And when they want to buy goods, not only are they charged their regular percentage, their also charged a Value-Added Tax, or VAT, that usually runs around 17%. VAT is imposed by their government, and it is charged on every good and service that is not food or healthcare. Like . . . a fridge, a washer and dryer, a car, a freezer, a coffee maker, radios, etc. The things that you take for granted that all come standard with your car -- those you have to pay extra for over there, ON TOP of your VAT, your 44% taxes.
And as for "free" healthcare? No, it's not free. Only the most basic necessities are "free." If you need glasses or dental work or something like this, you're paying for it. And if you want to be treated for your illness before you die from it, you're probably paying private healthcare for that too. Or doing what some of my friends have done: Book a plane to the States and get your surgery done here.
The fact is, America has problems, but so does everywhere else in the world. Instead of parroting what you hear everyone else saying, why don't you actually do some research and not hide behind the cloaks of pepole who probably haven't studied either.

As distasteful as the prospect might be to almost anyone you talk to, the political signs are all pointing to Hillary Clinton as our next president. Her political trajectory is almost identical to that of the current similarly unpopular and dislikable occupant of the oval office. First, with little to recommend her for the position, she is made a United States Senator, much like George H.W. Bush's ne'er-do-well eldest was made Governor of Texas. Then we are told that she has done such a good job in the position that she wins re-election by a landslide, setting her up for a run for the presidency. Actually, she is so generally disliked that she can't announce in advance open public appearances because they are likely to attract outspoken opponents, which is quite similar to George W's appearances only to carefully controlled audiences. Her primary asset--much like George W's was--is a mysterious ability to raise campaign funds.
She also gets a tremendous amount of publicity. In addition to the almost constant mention of her on the news, a great number of books have been written about her. I have had some unfavorable things to say about a couple of the lesser known ones, Judith Warner's Hillary Clinton, the Inside Story, and Gail Sheehy's Cover-up Book," Hillary's Choice. But the commentary that the people behind Google really don't want you to read is the fake Hillary attack book, The Truth About Hillary: What She Knew, When She Knew It, and How Far She'll Go to Become President, by Edward Klein. My commentary is called "Hillary Biographer Crude Propagandist."
In that article I reveal the devious methods by which the paid shill Klein promotes Hillary's candidacy while appearing to do the opposite. I'm sure the powers that be don't want you reading things like that, but that's probably not what got the article blacked out from Google. I also have a great deal of information in the article about Hillary's personal life that you want find in the hundreds upon hundreds of pages in the aforementioned books.
So what is the evidence that Google has banned reference to the article. Try searching for the odd combination of words that appear in the article, "Hillary Klein veterinarian." (I did it without quotation marks.) But before you do it on Google, do it on Yahoo.com, Ask.com, and AlltheWeb.com. In each of the latter three search engines, the "Crude Propagandist" article is the first thing that comes up. But on Google, the near-monopoly search engine, the article doesn't come up at all. You can even add "Parade of Lies" and "David Martin" and who knows what else from the article to the search string, and it still doesn't come up.
As a result of this article, that might change, or the other search engines might take it down, but as of this last day of June 2007, I rest my case.

The answers I just read for this question tell a different story about how great the United States really is. It is a great country, yes indeed, but, as you can tell by many answers, a good percentage of the citizens of the U.S. are unintelligent redneck sheep, with not a whole lot of intelligent things to say. These attitudes and opinions will be the death of the U.S. before too long. When my american brothers and sisters grow up and really take part in intelligent political discourse, we can take our place as leaders of the free world once more. I hope it won't take another Civil War to do this.

Universal health care? This is what you base your ridiculous opinion on? Let me know the numbers of Americans who go overseas or even to Canada or Mexico for health care. Here's your answer: statistically speaking the number is ZERO. Now, how many people come from every corner of this planet to America for healthcare only? Thousands upon thousands is the answer.Just the Mayo Clinic by itself handles hundreds every year. How many countries have people by the millions willing to risk their lives, families and fortunes to immigrate legally or illegally just for a shot at a better life? England? Sweden? Russia? China? Cuba? Class, anyone? One Country: America. Where does your so called utopia exist? Here's a suggestion, why don't you get up from your computer and go take a look for yourself at what makes this country great. Talk to someone who holds opinions different from your own. Do you know that the most telling commentary about liberals I ever heard was concerning GW's last election victory : "How could he have won? I don't know anyone who voted for him". Turn off your TV and try thinking for yourself instead of swallowing the liberal BS all your friends agree on. Start at the library in the American history section and read the works of the founding fathers. The thread you will discover is one of continual expansion of rights and opportunity for more and more people for more than 250 years. Oh and one final thing, there is an unbroken line of honor stretching back to our foundation as a nation, of hero's willing to die, willing to give the last full measure in order for people like you to spew your vitriol in complete and utter safety.

Waaaaaaaaaa......I can hear you whining all the way from your computer.
Sure, our country is a bit backwards in some of its beliefs, but show me a country that's perfect!
There are definitely a few things we need to work on, such as getting illegal immigrants the hell out, and putting an end to this war by becoming more aggressive. However, I don't go around whining and complaining about it, because I know that in order for us to be a strong country, we need to be unified.
If you don't like America, GO AWAY! It really is as simple as that.

Please travel outside the US and educate yourself.
Countries with universal health care have lots of people who die needlessly. Many of them do not have the equipment or know how to keep up with medicine. American billionaires buying parts of the world to preserve it. The Bill Gates of the world that donate billions upon billions of dollars. The first country on the scene with aid to tsunami victims was the US military. Doctors without borders, you could go on forever.
Of course people embrace a Queen, they have no choice, not like they voted for her.
Enough with race and gender already. The best qualified person should win. (blue, pick, black, white, whatever religion, it does not matter, etc....)

Hillary will win. I'm willing to bet she'll be more compassionate than those conservatives who tell you they are. The election of a woman in the U.S. is long overdue. Besides we need a woman to clean up this neo-con mess.
