DirectX 10 IS out, first guy is wrong. It is Vista only, and you have to have a DirectX 10 card to use it, but it IS out. If you do not have a DirectX 10 video card, but still have Vista, then you will be using the Direct 3d 9Ex the first guy mentioned. But to repeat one more time, DirectX 10 IS out.

DX10 is NOT out yet.
Yes in vista if you type "DXDiag" into the run box
and go into the dxdiag console, it will tell you that you have directx 10, however it doesn't actually have it.
what it has is a "beta" of 10 called D3D9Ex

it just says that because when dx10 comes out, it will be a required upgrade for vista (don't know if it'll release for xp, prob not for a while)
and don't forget that you need an NVIDIA 8k series or an ATI 2k series to utilize dx10
and as a side note:
dx10 will offer no improvements to directx9/8/7 games whatsoever.
a game must be written for a specific version of directx, however such games as Flight sim X was written for both 9 and 10, as well as a few others.

so just as halo 2 was written for vista specifically, so will dorect x 10, which means that if we want to continue to play games, we must spend thousands of $$$ on new pc that can handle vista AND key work there AND the games.

DirectX 10 is a feature of Windows Vista. It's not available for download, the current down loadable is version 9c. You have to have a graphics card that supports DirectX 10 to see its features, as well as games supporting it.

However your DirectX 9 games with see improvement if you have a DirectX 10 card & Vista.
