My goal is to go to Med. school. I finished my freshman year in college with 100 hours of volunteer work. My duty was to direct cars where to go in a parking lot in Los Angeles. After the car paid, I was supposed to direct them where to park, since space was limited.

Next im going to volunteer at a hospital. Is this too much volunteering or is it just right? Not that I dont enjoy helping people, its just that I dont want the people who review my application to think that someone with hundreds of hours of volunteer work must be crazy or something like that, but is this ok? Or what would you advice me to do next after volunteer work at the hospital?

Volunteer all you want as long as your grades are PERFECT. If you are going to volunteer, make sure you do so in the health care field, or at least in a science field, so that medical schools see your interest in science/healthcare. Volunteering at a hospital is a good idea. Make sure you do internships too, not just volunteer work.

interviewers are looking for well balanced folks to hire. so what you need to do is balance everything out so that it is even. You have to have fun time, stydy time and yes, volunteer time looks good too on a resume, but does directing cars really look good on an application to med school or a hospital? I would spend less time with volunteer work that is not directly related to my field of study, but I also would not spend all my free time doing volunteer work. A lot of interviewers do want to know what you do for recreation. They are interested in people that go bowling, fishing, skating, etc., believe it or not....so good luck

The hospital work is a good idea. I think that you should do different things at the hospital. It will help to show that you are interested in the hospital setting and go along with medical school.

Don't worry about having too many hours. I remember my brother got an award for having the most volunteer hours. It was many years ago, but it helped him when he applied for college and looked for a job.

Volunteer for the feeling you get helping people and not for an application...... Any amount of volunteer work is good.. Why not join an organization in your college that does a lot of volunteer work... I was in a sorority and we did tons of volunteer work and I met many exciting/interesting people in the process... We gave money to charities and held philathropic events and it was fun and a good resume builder to boot...

Volunteer hours can never hurt you. As long as you have time to do, go ahead and do it. Hopefully they can give you some volunteer hours in depts that actually have something to do with what you are trying to do. But volunteer hours can never hurt so keep volunteering.
