I'd ask him about his eye, in a polite way. If you don't ask, you don't learn. Besides, I'm interested in people, and they prefer to talk, rather than have others stare

I'd ask, if he hasn't realised by now I'd be greatly surprised. I'm sure he wouldn't mind talking about it, at least it would stop him wondering what you thought of him because of it.
