2012 is the end of the current cycle of the ancient Mayan calendar. it does not mean that there will be one single event on one single day that changes or destroys the planet, rather it is given as a general time frame or point of reference to a time of great change(NOT destruction) for all humankind.

December 21, 2012 — The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, notably used by the Maya civilization among others of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, completes its thirteenth b'ak'tun cycle since the calendar's mythical starting point (equivalent to 3114 BC August 11 in the proleptic Gregorian calendar, according to the "GMT-correlation" JDN= 584283).[1] The Long Count b'ak'tun date of this starting point (13.0.0.0.0) is repeated, for the first time in a span of approximately 5,125 solar years. The significance of this period-ending to the pre-Columbian Maya themselves is unclear, and there is an incomplete inscription (Tortuguero Stela 6) that records this date. It is also to be found carved on the walls of the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, where it functions as a base date from which other dates are computed.[2] However, it is conjectured that this may represent in the Maya belief system a transition from the current Creation world into the next. The December solstice for 2012 also occurs on this day.
NASA predicts that the Sun will also reverse its own magnetic poles during 2012 as result of reaching the end of current 11-year sunspot cycle. Some believe this will amplify the effects of retarding magnetic field on earth, as harmful charged particles blasted away from the sun would more easily penetrate the earth's atmosphere.
In 2012, asteroid 2004MN4 comes into view again to recalculate odds of impact.
2012 is sometimes claimed to be a great year of spiritual transformation (or apocalypse). Many esoteric sources interpret the completion of the twelfth B'ak'tun cycle in the Long Count of the Maya calendar (which occurs on December 21 by the most widely held correlation) to mean there will be a major change in world order.
Accordingly, several eclectic authors claim that a major, world-changing event will take place in 2012:
* The 1995 book The Mayan Prophecies linked the Maya calendar with long-period sunspot cycles.
* The book 2012: Mayan Year of Destiny claims the Maya may have been instructed in their wisdom by discarnate entities from Orion and the Pleiades. Contact was maintained through shamanic rituals conducted in accordance with the movements of planets and stars.
* The 1997 book The Bible Code claims that, according to certain algorithms of the Bible code, a meteor, asteroid or comet will collide with the Earth.
* The book The Nostradamus Code speaks of a series of natural disasters caused by a comet (possibly as above) that will allow the third Antichrist to disperse his troops around the globe under the guise of aid in preparation for a possible nuclear war, although in the strictest sense it is unspecific as to nuclear war or some other natural or man caused destruction.
* The book The Orion Prophecy claims that the Earth's magnetic field will reverse.
* The 2005 book Beyond 2012: Catastrophe or Ecstasy by Geoff Stray reviews several theories, prophecies and predictions concerning 2012 and finds where authors have used faulty information or have bent the truth to fit their theories.
* The 2006 book 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl by Daniel Pinchbeck discusses theories of a possible global awakening to psychic connection by the year 2012, creating a noosphere.
* The 2007 book Apocalypse 2012: A Scientific Investigation into Civilization's End by Lawrence Joseph does not make any specific new predictions, but it reviews a number of 2012 predictions made by various sources, and presents arguments for the possible existence of dangerous positive feedback loops involving solar storms, Earth's magnetic field, cosmic rays, hurricanes, global warming, earthquakes, and supervolcanoes that may be on the verge of erupting.
Other prophecies and apocalyptic writings and hypotheses for this year include:
* Terence McKenna's mathematical novelty theory suggests a point of singularity in which a great number of things could happen, including "hyperspatial breakthrough", planetesimal impact, alien contact, historical metamorphosis, metamorphosis of natural law, solar explosion, quasar ignition at the galactic core, or nothing. [11]
* The Prophecy of the Popes, attributed to Saint Malachy, speculated that Pope Benedict XVI would reign during the beginning of the tribulation of which Jesus spoke, and sometime later a future pope described in the prophecy as "Peter the Roman", the last in this prophetic list, would appear, bringing as a result the destruction of the city of Rome and the Last Judgment.
* Many new age spiritualists and philosophers ("new-agers") believe humankind will enter an age of enlightenment in 2012. There are a range of varying, generally positive, beliefs shared by a subset of spiritualists from the mundane to exceptional — including a positive social shift and age of peace, mankind becoming psychic and connected by a collective, and/or an evolution of the human race into non-corporeal beings made of "spiritual" energy, or light energy, i.e. 'ascension'.
* Some alien-enthusiasts (e.g. Riley Martin), along with some new-agers, believe 2012 to correspond approximately with the return of alien "watchers" or "caretakers" who might have helped the first human civilizations with developing their technology and may have been waiting for us to reach a higher level of technological and/or social advancement. Beliefs range from the extra-terrestrials having benevolent purposes — such as to help human society evolve — to malevolent purposes — such as enslavement of mankind and/or manipulation.[citation needed]
* The Nepalese ascetic Ram Bahadur Bomjon, the so-called "Buddha boy", reportedly told his followers that he would return around 2012.
* Some proponents of a peak oil catastrophe place major events in 2012. Richard C. Duncan's book The Peak of World Oil Production and the Road To The Olduvai Gorge claims that the Olduvai cliff will begin and permanent blackouts will occur worldwide. Several studies predict a peak in oil production in or around 2012. [12] [13] [14]
* There is a Hindu following indicating the appearance of an Avatar (God in human form) with God-like powers who will herald a new age. An interesting website to this effect appears at End of the World 2012.

Hi, look on Google and place Mayan Calendar and you'll get some websites to visit. Also, The Mayans were exceptionally smart people, who knows why they decided that 2012 was the End of earth as we call it. What I have read about them is that this date of the end of the world has something to do with the alignment of the planets, and the earth's rotation at this particular time if I understand this correctly. The Mayans and the Egyptians both predicted the end of the world but I believe the Egyptians were further up in years than the Mayans. I think they decided that the end was 2025 but I'm not for sure exactly. Good luck on your search. Have a great day!

google "mayan calendar 2012", and you will find enoung info and ideas to keep you busy until then.
Unless Jesus comes back on that day, nothing much different from any other day will happen. He could come then, or before or after then. Be prepared for His coming.
Back to the subject of 12/21/2012, there will be wars, weddings, births, deaths, homes built, homes burned or razed, kids will be celebrating a break from school (in the US, anyway), (some) adults will be working, people willl be pumping gas and paying for it, mothers will be cooking dinner, new movies will be premiered, families will break up, something new will be invented or written, men will be men, boys will be boys, life will go on for some but end for others. It will be just another day in the cycle of time.

Try this web site, its from a popular radio program called Coast to Coast AM, they talk about 2012 often on their show. If you go to their website, you may need to search under past shows, or just plug in 2012 in the sites search section, you'll find a lot of info on 2012 including books and websites you can check out.
Personally this is a theory I have:
Einstein said that if there are no bees to pollinate the earth then everything will die within 4 years. So if all the bees die within the next year, then it will leave us with 4 years until 2012.
I personally hope that doesn't happen, I hope 2012 is a year of enlightenment and the "death" of bad old ways we have on this earth.

I've been drawn to this topic as well. I don't know why, but I get this sense of forboding. I don't think that it's the end of the world, but I think that there will be something big, something potentially bad happening in the world.
There are already things happening in the world, but on a smaller scale. Violence has increased on a global scale. The honey bee is beginning to dissapear, with no obvious explanation as to why. Small things, seemingly inconsequential things, but they fortell that we need to start planning for some huge event in the life of our species.
I am trying to start planning on becoming more self sufficient. I want to know how to make my own clothes, soaps, food, ect. It's good for me on so many different levels, as it will remove me from the trappings of everyday life & the clutches of the modern day economy. If nothing happens, then I will at least know how to take care of myself. Just think: if the political systems were to collapse & we were unable to get our daily needs in our former manner, how likely is it that you could survive?
Here's a few of the websites that I have found. They are all interesting, but some tend to go a teeny bit overboard at times. Who knows what will happen, but it wouldn't hurt to prepare yourself.
In the best case scenario it will "merely" be a spiritual awakening that will not do us any harm physically. In the worst case scenario we may be facing an extinction level event.

I'm sure you can Google it.
From my understanding, in the year 2012 the Mayan calendar predicted the end of a cycle, not the end of the world. I'm not even sure that there will be any event to signal the end of this cycle and the beginning of the next, but people seem to think that there will be.

There are no GOOD websites on the Mayan calendar ending in 2012 because it doesn't end in 2012. Calendars don't end, time doesn't end. It's a baktun shift, the end of a 400 year cycle.
So any theory based on the calendar ending, such as the idea that the world is ending, is wrong.

ok. wrap your mind around this. maybe the mayans intended more, but the arrival of the spaniards interrupted the process. you can only carve stone by hand so long before you need a break, after all.
there's also the fact that the spaniards destroyed what they could and threw out what they couldn't. finding this calendar was luck. there might have been another calendar made of gold or silver that the spaniards melted and turned into something else, or a stone one that was thrown away and hasn't been re-discovered yet.
we'll never know for sure, unless someone tricks out a delorian with a flux capacitor or meets dr who.
