Increase
41,800

percentage
12.2%

how do I determine that 41,800 is a 12.2% increase from 343,200 to 385,000?

I know there is a formula for dertermining that the change is 12.2% but I just can't remember it.

The formula is (new amount - old amount) divided by old amount.
That will give you a fraction; multiply it by 100 to get the percentage.

A mistake would be to divide the increase by the new amount.

A decrease of 12.2% from 385,000 would look something like:
385,000 times (1 - 0.122) = 338030
(when doing percentages, use decimals)
0.(tens column of percentage)(ones column of percentage)(decimals of percentage)
therefore 12.2% becomes 0.122
and 100% becomes 1.00
an increase would look something like this:
343,200 times (1.122) = 385070.4
changing percentages into decimals and then multiplying by 100% plus 12.2% which is 112.2% of the original value and in decimal form would be 1.122

385000 less 343200 equals 41800

41800 divided by 343200 equals 0.12179

rounding up to the second digit you get 0.122

now multiply by 100 for a percentage and you get 12.2% (increase)

if is a decrease (i.e. from 385000 to 343200) you simply take the difference and divide it by the larger number (in this case 385000)

41800 / 385000 = .0108

and you get a 10.8% decrease

(New-old)/old.
In your case, (385000-343200)/343200.
