Fly. There's a Delta/Comair shuttle between Boston and Chicago that is less than $200 round trip. I think it only operates 2 or 3 times each day, but it goes from Logan to Midway, both of which are accessible by public transportation. I'm not sure how far in advance you have to book to get that rate, but every time I've checked for flights to Chicago, it's been just under $200.

There are 4 choices.
Drive, fly, bus, and rail.

The quickest, fly. 2 hours.
The slowest and most uncomfortable, bus.
The least convenient, train. There is only 1 a day each direction, and you won;t have a choice as to when you leave,
Drive, convenient, but a long time to be in a car, and unless you have a fairly late model in very good consdition, risky.
By driving, you have use of your car while there, by train or air or bus, you don't.

If you don't need your car while you're there consider flying out of Providence or Mancherster, NH. by Southwest airlines.

I got a roundtrip ticket from Chicago to Manchester (Boston regional airport) for $117 through Southwest. They have really nice sales sometimes and you can buy the tix a few weeks in advance.

Fly! It's only 2.5 hours and you can find one-way and round trip cheap fares cheap on www.kayak.com. Just keep playing around with times and dates.
Both are great cities. Enjoy!

Well driving would take a long time, and really a bus would take just as long (actually longer) and you'll be uncomfortable. . .I would say just fly. If you're worried about cost, try places like Priceline and see if you can get a good deal.
