Our apartment building seems to be a nesting ground for bats. Our landlady has been doing everything that she can think of but they just seem to find somewhere else to hide. This year has not been as bad as previous ones, and we do not want to kill them--just get them out of the building. Help--please!!

At some hardware or superstores you can find a product called bat-b-gone you plug it into an electric outlet in the house and the noise makes the bats go away. Humans cant hear the noise so just leave it plugged in.

This is probably only a solution for barns, but owls totally wiped out bats in a barn on a farm on which I worked many, many years ago. In addition, extremely bright lights do panic them (obviously the windows should be open), but in their panic they will fly about somewhat randomly. However, a group of people using very bright lights and in the dark AND WITH EYE PROTECTION AGAINST LIGHT (not just sunglasses) actually can herd them. This process is not 100% successful but it can lower their population significantly. Enough repeat performances might do it. Best bet - hire exterminators and evacuate the building of people and pets.

Another good approach is to build bat houses on the outside of the building, up high out of reach of people and cats. They are harmless and very useful. They eat an unbelievable number of insects, especially mosquitoes and gnats.

The easiest way that I have found is by exclusion. Basically, you wait until the bats have left to go hunt, and then you cover their entrance in the roost site with a screen or mesh. More details and construction ideas are available at the Minnesota DNR's website below.

we had a bat once, and we hit it with a tennis racket and then carried its unconcious body outside, where it flew away. The bat can't see the tennis racket because sound waves go through the holes
